ICOM 2024 International Symposium Explores Museums' Role In Evolving Communities
The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, in partnership with the UAE chapter of the International Council of Museums (ICOM-UAE), has announced the ICOM 2024 International Symposium. This event is part of preparations for the 27th ICOM General Conference, set to take place in Dubai in 2025. It marks the first time this conference will be held in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia.
The symposium will occur at the Etihad Museum on 12th November. It will focus on three key areas: Intangible Heritage, Youth Power, and New Technologies. These themes aim to address how museums can adapt to rapid global changes. The event will provide a platform for dialogue among museum experts from around the world.

Edward Rodley, Co-Founder & Principal of The Experience Alchemists (TEA), will lead discussions on 'New Technologies.' His keynote speech will explore how technology can both aid and challenge museums in engaging with audiences. Following his address, presentations by Marjan Faraidooni, Dr Simon Tanner, and Pablo Guayasamín Madriñán will delve into museums' technological choices.
These presentations aim to showcase innovative uses of technology that enhance audience connections while preserving cultural authenticity. The speakers will reflect on how museums are adapting to meet evolving community needs and environmental changes.
Dr Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh, Cultural Advisor to the UAE President, will discuss safeguarding intangible heritage. He will be joined by His Excellency Dr Abdulaziz Abdulrahman Almusallam and Alia Yunis. Their talks will focus on preserving community heritage amidst changing global landscapes.
Youth empowerment in shaping future museums will be addressed by Sheikh Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi. An interactive panel featuring Munira Al Sayegh and Osemudiamen Ekore will explore cultural trends and their impact on communities.
Workshops and Training Sessions
For the first time in ICOM's history, training workshops led by international committee experts will be part of the symposium. Participants can learn about collection documentation, local communities' roles in heritage preservation, and emergency planning for museums.
The workshops aim to equip participants with knowledge on disaster preparedness and recovery strategies. These sessions highlight ICOM's commitment to enhancing museum practices globally.
Dubai's Role in Hosting ICOM 2025
Founded in 1946 under the United Nations umbrella, ICOM is a global organisation dedicated to museum development. With over 50,000 members from nearly 120 countries, it plays a crucial role in coordinating museum activities worldwide.
In April 2021, ICOM-UAE submitted a bid to host the ICOM General Conference 2025 in Dubai. This decision recognises Dubai's leadership in heritage preservation and its innovative approach to developing its creative economy.
The selection of Dubai from a competitive list of candidates underscores its prominent role on the global cultural stage. The upcoming symposium is a significant step towards hosting this prestigious conference.
