House Of Wisdom Concludes Cultural Showcase At Rabat Book Fair With Focus On Islamic Travel Literature

At the 30th Rabat International Book and Publishing Fair, Sharjah's Guest of Honour participation was marked by the House of Wisdom's tribute to Islamic travel literature. This event highlighted the contributions of Ahmad Ibn Majid and Ibn Battuta. The exhibition attracted notable figures such as Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority, and His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid.

The cultural showcase also welcomed Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Chairman of Ajman Municipality and Planning Department, along with Aawatif Hayar, Moroccan Minister of Solidarity, Social Integration and the Family. Marwa Al Aqroubi, Executive Director of House of Wisdom, guided these dignitaries through an exhibit celebrating Arab achievements in maritime navigation and travel literature.

Cultural Showcase at Rabat Book Fair Ends

Al Aqroubi described Morocco as "a timeless crossroads of Arab-Islamic heritage." She emphasised that Sharjah’s participation reinforced its cultural commitment, which was first recognised when it was named UNESCO World Book Capital in 2019. This recognition precedes Rabat’s upcoming designation in 2026.

A significant session titled "Chapters of Islamic Art: Travelogues" featured Dr Abdulaziz Al Musallam from the Sharjah Institute for Heritage and Sheikha Al Mutairi from Juma Al Majid Center. They discussed what motivated Muslim travellers and how early explorers continue to influence today’s world.

The House of Wisdom displayed rare manuscripts and books like "The Verses of Ibn Majid," a poetic maritime anthology. Another highlight was "Memorandum for Historians on the Innocence of Ibn Majid," written by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi. This work refutes claims about Ibn Majid's involvement with Portuguese colonial expansion.

Ibn Battuta’s renowned work, "A Masterpiece to Those Who Contemplate the Wonders of Cities and the Marvels of Traveling," was also featured. First printed in 1933, this book has been translated into several languages. Visitors could explore this ongoing exhibition in Sharjah until 5th July through an interactive virtual tour.

Promoting Cultural Diplomacy

The participation by House of Wisdom highlights Sharjah's dedication to enhancing cultural diplomacy and promoting Arab and Islamic heritage worldwide. By using travel literature as a medium, they aim to foster civilisational dialogue across different cultures.
