HCT Launches HCT-SAT1 Satellite Designed By Students In Collaboration With MBRSC

The Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), in collaboration with the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), is preparing to launch HCT-SAT1 this January. This satellite, designed by HCT students, marks a significant milestone in space exploration for the institution. Over 34 students from various fields contributed to this project, guided by MBRSC experts.

Dr. Faisal Alayyan, President and CEO of HCT, expressed that this initiative reflects their commitment to nurturing future Emirati leaders in space science and technology. He stated, "This project, developed in collaboration with the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre, reflects our unwavering dedication to shaping the future with a new generation of Emirati leaders in space science and technology."

HCT and MBRSC Launch HCT-SAT1 Satellite

Dr. Alayyan emphasised that the HCT-SAT1 mission exemplifies applied education linked to real-world outcomes. The partnership with MBRSC enhances educational programmes and offers students unique opportunities to work alongside experts both locally and internationally. This collaboration supports the UAE’s ambition to lead globally in space exploration.

Salem Humaid Al Marri, Director-General of MBRSC, highlighted that developing HCT-SAT1 with HCT significantly enhances national educational institutions' roles in the space sector. He noted that it showcases MBRSC’s commitment to nurturing distinguished Emirati talent and developing human capabilities.

The project involved students from diverse engineering disciplines such as aeronautical sciences, airframe design, and electrical engineering. Media students also participated by handling marketing aspects. Nine faculty members collaborated with MBRSC experts throughout all stages from design to testing and launch.

Al Marri explained that this project provided valuable hands-on experience in satellite development for students. It aligns with the UAE’s vision for innovation and scientific excellence while highlighting Emirati youth's capabilities in working with advanced technologies.

Strategic Partnerships Strengthening UAE's Position

The project underscores MBRSC’s dedication to forming strategic partnerships that bolster the UAE’s status as a global hub for space research and development. A team from HCT plans to travel to the United States later this month for the satellite's launch.

In April 2024, MBRSC announced work on HCT-SAT1 would begin under expert supervision from MBRSC. This nanosatellite dedicated to Earth observation involves assembly, integration, testing, and launch preparations conducted by HCT students.

Integrating Space Technology into Education

This initiative provides comprehensive educational experiences for both students and faculty through training on the "CubeSat" concept. It represents a crucial step toward integrating space technology into education while advancing UAE’s position in space science.

This collaborative effort between HCT and MBRSC not only empowers national talent but also strengthens educational ties within the region's growing space sector.
