Hamdan Bin Zayed Witnesses Groundbreaking Ceremony For ADNOC’s Lower-Carbon Ruwais LNG Project
H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan recently attended the groundbreaking ceremony for ADNOC's lower-carbon Ruwais LNG project in Al Ruwais Industrial City, Al Dhafra Region. He also visited the Borouge 4 site and reviewed progress on the Hail and Ghasha and TA’ZIZ mega-projects. These initiatives aim to transform Al Dhafra into an energy trading and advanced industrial hub.
ADNOC is investing around AED175 billion in these projects, including Ruwais LNG, Hail and Ghasha, Borouge 4, and TA’ZIZ. This investment leverages synergies across ADNOC’s value chain, including feedstock supply. Sheikh Hamdan was joined by a delegation of dignitaries and senior officials from the Abu Dhabi Government during his visit.
Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO, welcomed Sheikh Hamdan to Al Ruwais Industrial City. During the visit, Sheikh Hamdan received a briefing on ADNOC's mega-projects in the region. He praised ADNOC’s leadership in driving growth in Al Ruwais Industrial City.
The ongoing mega-projects are crucial for supporting the UAE’s economic growth. They span the energy value chain from gas production to chemicals, using AI and advanced technologies to enhance efficiency and reduce emissions. These investments reinforce ADNOC’s commitment to sustainable economic growth by developing infrastructure and creating jobs.
The lower-carbon Ruwais LNG Project will more than double ADNOC’s UAE LNG production capacity to over 15 million tons per annum (mtpa). Dr Sultan Al Jaber stated: "We are honoured by the presence of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan for the groundbreaking of ADNOC’s landmark lower-carbon Ruwais LNG Project."
He added that these strategic mega-projects will provide more lower-carbon energy globally while strengthening UAE’s energy security. They will also accelerate In-Country Value and boost economic diversification, aligning with leadership directives.
Hail and Ghasha Mega-Project
Sheikh Hamdan was briefed on the Hail and Ghasha mega-project, which aims to help the UAE become gas self-sufficient while meeting global natural gas demand during the energy transition. The project targets net zero emissions and plans to produce 1 billion standard cubic feet of gas daily.
This initiative positions the UAE as one of the largest global producers of high-quality sulfur. The project is part of efforts to meet rising global demand for natural gas as an essential fuel during energy transitions.
Borouge 4 Expansion
During his visit, Sheikh Hamdan toured Borouge 4, one of the UAE’s largest industrial projects. This mega-project will expand Borouge’s production capacity by 1.4 mtpa to 6.4 mmtpa upon completion by late 2025. It is expected to generate up to $1.9 billion (AED7 billion) in annual revenue.
The expansion will see Borouge progress with developing the world’s largest single-site polyolefin complex, enhancing its production capabilities significantly.
TA’ZIZ Chemicals Ecosystem
Sheikh Hamdan was updated on TA’ZIZ's development in Al Ruwais, focusing on chemicals and transition fuels. Production is set to begin in 2027 with Phase 1 aiming for 4.7 mtpa of chemicals by 2028. Phase 2 plans to increase total production beyond 11 mtpa.
TA’ZIZ will manufacture a variety of chemicals not previously produced in the UAE, contributing significantly to local industrial capabilities.
The comprehensive investments in these projects underscore ADNOC's dedication to fostering sustainable economic growth in Al Dhafra Region through infrastructure development and job creation while nurturing a robust domestic industrial ecosystem.
