Hamdan Bin Mohammed Witnesses Strategic Agreement With Firefly Aerospace For Emirates Lunar Mission
The UAE is set to explore the Moon's far side with the Rashid 2 Rover, thanks to a new agreement between the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) and Firefly Aerospace. This collaboration will see the rover deployed on Firefly's Blue Ghost lander in 2026, alongside payloads from NASA, ESA, and Australia. The signing ceremony took place at Emirates Towers.
H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum emphasised the UAE's commitment to lunar exploration. "The UAE’s mission to explore the far side of the Moon places our nation among a select group of countries advancing the frontiers of lunar exploration," he said. The agreement reflects a strategy of forming global partnerships to advance scientific and space technology goals.
Talal Humaid Belhoul Al Falasi, Vice President of MBRSC, expressed gratitude for the support from H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and UAE leadership. He highlighted their role in enabling the nation's strategic involvement in global space exploration. The Emirates Lunar Mission aims to transform vision into reality by exploring the Moon's far side.
Salem Humaid AlMarri, Director General of MBRSC, noted that this agreement marks a significant step for UAE's lunar exploration efforts. Through Rashid 2 Rover, the UAE will join a select group of nations exploring the Moon's far side. The mission aims to provide valuable scientific data on lunar surface conditions and support future infrastructure development.
The Rashid 2 Rover will demonstrate mobility on challenging lunar terrain while conducting experiments on material adhesion using its wheels. These findings could influence future technology designs like spacesuits and habitats. Equipped with cameras and probes, it will study lunar plasma, geology, and thermal conditions to aid future deep space exploration.
Hamad Obaid AlMansoori, Chairman of MBRSC, stated that this agreement underscores UAE’s dedication to long-term scientific progress and impactful global partnerships. The Emirates Lunar Mission embodies a vision driven by contributing to humanity’s understanding of the Moon and supporting future lunar infrastructure development.
Global Collaboration for Lunar Exploration
Jason Kim, CEO of Firefly Aerospace, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with the UAE on this mission. "We’re honoured to support the international space community with our versatile Blue Ghost and Elytra spacecraft," he said. This mission represents an opportunity for Artemis Accords nations to expand their presence on the Moon's far side.
The Emirates Lunar Mission is part of a broader strategy under UAE’s National Space Programme aimed at advancing scientific knowledge and fostering international cooperation. It prioritises empowering future generations while strengthening UAE’s position as a key player in global space exploration.
The strategic agreement between MBRSC and Firefly Aerospace highlights UAE's growing role in shaping lunar exploration's future. As preparations continue for this historic milestone, UAE remains dedicated to expanding its contributions towards humanity’s long-term presence in space.
