The Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT), in collaboration with the Gulf Association for Metrology, recently hosted the second Gulf Metrology Forum, a pivotal event that underscored the integral role of metrology in bolstering industrial capabilities and fostering sustainability. This two-day forum, themed 'Metrology for Sustainability', attracted over 200 local and international officials and experts. It featured a series of panel discussions and technical presentations that shed light on the latest developments within the field.

One of the forum's focal points was the essential support required for emerging national metrology institutes within GCC states. The United Arab Emirates' role as the host of this forum reflects its leading position in the Quality Infrastructure for Sustainable Development Index (QI4SD), where it ranks first in the Middle East and North Africa region and 11th globally. The UAE's quality infrastructure is vital for boosting product confidence, enhancing production efficiency, and supporting sustainability and innovation.

Omar Al Suwaidi, Under-Secretary of MoIAT, emphasized that precise metrology results are fundamental to promoting sustainable industries. The ministry is dedicated to coordinating with regional and international partners to improve quality infrastructure, standards, technical legislation, conformity, accreditation systems, and programs.

Saud bin Nasser Al Khusaibi, Chairman of the GCC Standardization Organization (GSO), highlighted the forum's role as a crucial platform for cooperation and innovation in standardization. He pointed out that standards are key to achieving sustainability across various sectors including industry, healthcare, and clean energy production.

Saeed Mohammed Al Muhairi, Executive Director of the Emirates Metrology Institute, underscored the forum's importance in supporting sustainable development, innovation, and economic progress both in the UAE and across the Gulf region. The event included sessions focusing on metrology's role in shaping a sustainable future with contributions from various experts and organizations.

During the forum, two memoranda of understanding (MOUs) were signed to bolster research in metrology and enhance industrial sector competitiveness. One MOU was between GULFMET and the International Measurement Confederation (IMEKO), while the other involved GULFMET and the European Union Laboratory Association (EUROLAB).

The forum also offered a platform for emerging professionals to discuss their experiences and perspectives on metrology. These discussions aligned with the BIPM Young Metrologists 2050+ initiative, highlighting both challenges and opportunities within the field.

In essence, the second Gulf Metrology Forum served as a significant venue for deliberating on metrology's pivotal role in sustainability. It facilitated discussions on cooperation, innovation, and ways to enhance the UAE's quality infrastructure and industrial sector.
