Passenger Demand Sees 11% Increase In April, IATA Data Shows

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released its data for global passenger demand in April 2024, showing an 11.0 percent increase in total demand, measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPKs), compared to April 2023. Total capacity, measured in available seat kilometres (ASK), rose by 9.6 percent year-on-year. The April load factor was recorded at 82.4 percent, a 1.0 percentage point increase from April 2023.

International demand saw a significant rise of 15.8 percent compared to April 2023. Capacity for international flights increased by 14.8 percent year-on-year, and the load factor improved to 82.2 percent, up by 0.7 percentage points from the previous year. On the domestic front, demand rose by 4.0 percent compared to April 2023, with capacity up by 2.1 percent year-on-year and a load factor of 82.6 percent, marking a 1.5 percentage point increase.

11% Rise in Passenger Demand

"Passenger demand has been growing for 36 consecutive months," said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director-General. As the northern summer travel season approaches, there is optimism for a strong summer with airlines offering a wide range of travel options. A recent IATA survey revealed that 97 percent of passengers were satisfied with their last flight, highlighting the importance of maintaining high standards across the travel value chain.

Survey Insights and Environmental Goals

The IATA Passenger Survey also indicated that 88 percent of respondents believe air travel improves their lives. This sentiment is particularly relevant as IATA members prepare for the Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit in Dubai next week. Walsh emphasised the importance of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 to ensure that people can continue to benefit from air travel while addressing environmental concerns.
