GigaFarm Initiative Begins In Dubai Food Tech Valley To Enhance Food Security And Sustainability

The innovative decarbonised farm project in Dubai Food Tech Valley has officially begun. This master development was launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and is led by Wasl, a prominent property developer in Dubai. The groundbreaking ceremony saw attendance from key figures including Dr. Amna bint Abdulla Aldahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, and Jonathan Reynolds, British Secretary of State for Business and Trade.

Dr. Al Dahak highlighted the UAE's progress in establishing a global model for food security through innovation. She stated, "The UAE is progressing in presenting a global model of food security based on innovation and strengthening efforts to build sustainable food and agricultural systems that drive development and build a better future for the nation and the world." This initiative aims to enhance sustainable food systems worldwide.

GigaFarm Initiative Launches in Dubai Food Tech Valley

The GigaFarm project, developed by ReFarm Global and Intelligent Growth Solutions (IGS), will integrate six complementary technologies. It aims to create a self-sustaining closed-loop ecosystem that maximises resource efficiency. The project spans 900,000 square feet at Food Tech Valley, focusing on addressing food security challenges locally and globally.

Food production at the site is set to commence in 2025. Once operational, it will produce over three million kilos of produce annually using IGS's AI-driven vertical farming technology. This approach will significantly reduce waste by diverting over 50,000 tonnes of food waste from landfills each year.

The collaboration between the UAE and UK governments has been crucial in advancing this project. Andrew Lloyd from IGS expressed gratitude for the supportive environment created by both governments. He noted that this project represents a global first in integrating technology into a circular system for regenerative food security.

Hesham Abdulla Al Qassim, Group CEO of Wasl, emphasised the project's transformative nature: "Food Tech Valley is a transformative project designed to build a resilient food ecosystem, decarbonise food production and contribute to global food security." He acknowledged the collaborative efforts with stakeholders to pioneer innovation at the site.

Commitment to Sustainable Practices

The GigaFarm project aligns with the UAE's National Food Security Strategy 2051 goals by increasing local production through climate-smart agricultural technologies. Dr. Al Dahak added that collaboration is key to laying foundations for sustainable food security both locally and globally.

Oliver Christof from ReFarm shared insights on their progress since unveiling GigaFarm at COP28 last December. They have demonstrated over 60 crop varieties and diverted more than 40 tonnes of waste from landfills during their operations in Dubai's Al Quoz area.

The UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade praised this joint effort: "Food security and climate change are global challenges – the best way to tackle these is by working together." He commended British innovators' role in supporting regenerative farming efforts within this ambitious endeavour.

This pioneering initiative positions Dubai Food Tech Valley as a leader in sustainable agriculture within the region. It sets new standards for innovative, cost-effective food production driven by advanced technology solutions.
