Germany Welcomes 15% More GCC Visitors For Overnight Stays In 2023

The German National Tourist Board (GNTB) has reported a significant uptick in the number of GCC travellers visiting Germany, with a 15 percent increase in overnight stays during 2023. This surge translates to 1,297,256 room nights, up from 1,128,341 in the previous year. The announcement came during a press conference at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2024, highlighting Germany's growing appeal among GCC tourists.

Yamina Sofo, Director of the German National Tourist GCC Office (GNTO GCC), an affiliate of GNTB, expressed enthusiasm over the rise in overnight stays. She attributed this success to Germany's rich cultural heritage, scenic landscapes, commitment to sustainability, and welcoming atmosphere. Sofo also emphasized the importance of ATM as a cornerstone of their marketing strategy, aiming to surpass pre-pandemic visitation numbers.

Germany's popularity as a travel destination is further evidenced by its ranking within the top three incoming markets for the GCC region, trailing only behind the US and China. In 2022, it was the leading inbound source market from Asia and Australasia for Germany, with more than 404,000 arrivals—a figure that represents a growth of over 117 percent compared to 2021.

Financial contributions from GCC guests also saw a remarkable increase, with revenues reaching 2.1 billion euros in 2022. This marks a 110 percent rise from the previous year, averaging at 4,443 euros per trip per guest. Such statistics not only highlight Germany's recovery post-pandemic but also its potential for attracting more visitors in the future.

In anticipation of Euro 2024 and aiming to promote Germany as a year-round holiday destination, GNTO is focusing on enhancing flight connectivity. Currently, there are over 207 direct weekly flights from the GCC to Germany, serving five major international airports: Munich, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Berlin, and Hamburg. This increased flight availability is expected to further boost visitor numbers from the GCC region.

Germany's strategic efforts in marketing and its diverse attractions continue to solidify its position as a preferred destination for GCC travellers. With initiatives aimed at encouraging longer stays and showcasing the country's myriad offerings, Germany is set on a path to welcome even more visitors in the coming years.
