G42, a technology group based in the UAE, has partnered with Semafor to release a report titled "What AI Experts Want from Their Employers." This study provides insights into what motivates top AI professionals and what employers need to offer to attract and retain them in a competitive global market. The report draws on feedback from 750 AI specialists in key talent hubs worldwide.
The report highlights several critical factors influencing AI professionals' decisions. Compensation, job security, and work-life balance are top priorities. Specifically, 68% of respondents consider compensation important, while only 43% are satisfied with it. Similarly, job security is crucial for 70%, but only 48% feel secure. Work-life balance is valued by 67%, yet just 48% are content with their current situation.

AI professionals across different experience levels prioritise skills like deep learning, data engineering, and programming. Senior experts focus on machine learning specialisation, whereas implementation specialists value cybersecurity and intellectual curiosity. These skills are essential for advancing in the field and meeting employer expectations.
Role-Specific Preferences
Different roles within AI have distinct priorities. Research-focused professionals seek autonomy and global exposure. In contrast, those involved in implementation prefer competitive salaries, rapid career growth, and ethical AI commitments. These preferences highlight the diverse needs within the AI workforce.
Work Environment Preferences
Hybrid work models are particularly appealing to associate-level respondents, with 70% favouring this setup compared to 53% of team leaders. This preference indicates a shift towards more flexible work arrangements among junior professionals seeking hands-on learning opportunities.
Leadership Aspirations
Senior AI professionals are drawn to leadership roles that focus on sustainability and long-term impact. Meanwhile, junior talent looks for flexibility and fast-tracked career progression. These aspirations reflect the evolving landscape of career development within the AI sector.
Maymee Kurian, Group Human Capital and Culture Officer at G42, stated: "This report reinforces what we see every day: that attracting and retaining AI talent goes far beyond compensation; it’s about purpose, opportunity, and impact. The most sought-after professionals today want to work on cutting-edge projects in organisations that align with their values and offer room to grow and lead."
G42's collaborations with NVIDIA, AMD, Cerebras, Qualcomm, OpenAI, and a significant US$1.5 billion investment from Microsoft in 2024 position it uniquely to provide transformative opportunities for leading AI minds globally.
The UAE's strategic investments in sovereign AI infrastructure have positioned it as a global leader in artificial intelligence. PwC projects that by 2030, the country will rank third globally for AI's contribution to national GDP due to effective public-private collaboration.
This comprehensive report offers valuable insights for organisations worldwide aiming to attract top-tier AI talent by aligning their offerings with these professionals' evolving needs and expectations.
