Fresh Bread Returns To Gaza After Two Months Of Humanitarian Blockade And Urgent Need For Aid
Several bakeries in southern and central Gaza have resumed bread production, thanks to support from the World Food Programme (WFP). This development follows the arrival of trucks carrying essential supplies from the Kerem Shalom border crossing. These bakeries are now distributing bread through hot meal kitchens. Despite this progress, families remain at high risk of famine after nearly 80 days without humanitarian aid.
Vital convoys have recently entered Gaza, delivering wheat flour and resources for hot meal kitchens. Additional aid includes baby formula, nutrition supplements for malnourished children, and medical supplies. However, providing more than one meal a day is crucial to combat famine effectively. Diverse food items are needed to address the nutritional needs of the population.

Antoine Renard, WFP country director, emphasised the urgency of the situation: "We are in a race against time to prevent widespread starvation," he stated. "WFP will capitalise on every opportunity to deliver critical food supplies to Gaza’s desperate population. However, this is just a drop in the bucket of what is needed to reverse the catastrophic levels of hunger."
The most effective method to prevent starvation is direct food package distribution to families. Unfortunately, this approach is currently not permitted and needs urgent reconsideration. The WFP has highlighted that over 308 million pounds of food are pre-positioned at aid corridors. This amount could sustain Gaza's population for two months if allowed entry.
Renard further stressed the need for immediate action: "Humanitarian agencies require immediate, unrestricted and safe access to flood Gaza with lifesaving aid. This is the only way to avert an entirely preventable disaster." The call for unrestricted access underscores the critical need for international cooperation in addressing this humanitarian crisis.
The ongoing blockade has severely impacted Gaza's ability to receive necessary aid. While recent deliveries mark progress, they fall short of meeting the extensive needs of the population. Comprehensive efforts are essential to ensure sustained relief and recovery.
The situation remains dire as families continue facing severe food shortages despite recent aid deliveries. The international community must act swiftly to provide more substantial support and ensure safe passage for humanitarian assistance into Gaza.
