FNC Celebrates International Day Of Democracy With Global Parliaments On September 15, 2025

The Federal National Council (FNC) is celebrating the International Day of Democracy on 15 September 2025. This event reflects the UAE's leadership vision and its people's aspirations over five decades. The UAE has a long tradition of Shura, or consultation, which predates the Union's formation. This practice is deeply rooted in Emirati society.

The FNC was established with the Union's declaration and held its inaugural session on 12 February 1972. It was inspired by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and other Emirates' Rulers. The council embodies political principles that emphasize citizen participation in nation-building and sustainable development.

FNC Marks International Day of Democracy

President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan continues to uphold the founding fathers' legacy by promoting Shura. He empowers the FNC to exercise its constitutional powers, highlighting its role in addressing national concerns. This approach contributes significantly to the UAE's progress and development.

The FNC's journey exemplifies leadership support and citizen involvement in national affairs. Over eighteen legislative terms, it has strengthened parliamentary life and political participation. This aligns with Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan's programme, which included elections for half of the Council's members and women's participation.

The FNC actively exercises its constitutional powers through parliamentary questions, general topics adoption, draft law discussions, and participation in international events focused on democracy and human rights. These practices ensure alignment with best parliamentary standards.

In a global meeting of parliamentary speakers, the UAE Parliamentary Division proposed "international democracy." They emphasized that international decision-making should be based on fair democratic principles to ensure equality among states' sovereignty and contribute to collective international security.

A Vision for Future Generations

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan articulated the Council’s role in his speech during its first session on 12 February 1972. He stated: "The people in every place participate in shaping life on this blessed land... The responsibility of building this nation does not fall on the government alone."

The FNC remains committed to enhancing political participation by empowering citizens as voters and members. Since 2019, women have achieved 50% representation in the council, reflecting a commitment to gender equality within parliamentary roles.

The FNC stands as a model for leadership support and citizen engagement in national processes. Its principles guide a collaborative effort towards building a prosperous future for current and future generations.
