FANR Reviews Barakah Nuclear Power Plant Progress And International Partnerships For Safety
The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) Board of Management recently convened to discuss significant developments. Christer Viktorsson, FANR's Director-General, shared insights from two major international forums: the 6th UAE–Republic of Korea High-Level Consultations on Nuclear Cooperation and the first China-GCC Forum on Peaceful Nuclear Technology. These discussions underscored the UAE's expanding influence in global nuclear cooperation.
During the meeting, Viktorsson highlighted how these forums have strengthened ties with Korea in nuclear safety, research and development, and advanced technologies. Additionally, they have bolstered multilateral efforts with China and GCC countries to advance peaceful nuclear applications, safety measures, and non-proliferation initiatives.

The Board also received updates on the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant's four units. Information was provided on their operational status, refuelling schedules, and maintenance plans. FANR ensures compliance with regulatory standards through regular inspections to maintain safe operations at the plant.
In addition to operational updates, the Board reviewed FANR’s enforcement mechanisms related to violations and penalties as per the UAE Cabinet Resolution. This update detailed FANR’s strategies for ensuring adherence to regulations through effective enforcement measures.
The Board discussed FANR’s cooperation plans for 2025, focusing on nuclear and radiation safety as well as research projects. Collaboration remains a key element of the UAE Nuclear Programme. FANR aims to broaden its cooperative efforts across various regulatory areas.
Furthermore, the Board approved FANR's 2024 Annual Report. This document outlines FANR's regulatory activities and achievements over the past year, providing a comprehensive overview of its milestones.
FANR continues to play a pivotal role in enhancing international nuclear cooperation while ensuring stringent regulatory compliance within the UAE. The authority remains committed to promoting safe and peaceful use of nuclear technology both domestically and globally.
