FANR Collaborates With Korean Entities To Boost Nuclear Safety And Technology
A delegation from the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), led by Director-General Christer Viktorsson, recently visited the Republic of Korea. The visit aimed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in nuclear regulation, safety, and research and development.
During the visit, FANR met with the Republic of Korea’s Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC). Both parties exchanged updates on ongoing regulatory activities, including nuclear safety and power plant oversight. They also discussed cooperation in radiation safety in medicine and other mutual interests.

FANR also engaged with the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS). Discussions covered nuclear regulation, updates on national nuclear energy programmes, and the exchange of operating experiences. Additionally, FANR and KINS renewed a cooperation agreement focusing on regulatory oversight of nuclear facilities, safety regulations for advanced technologies, and radioactive waste management.
The delegation also met with the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). Discussions centred on ongoing cooperation in research and development and activities of the Emirates Nuclear Technology Center (ENTC).
Historical Context
FANR's collaboration with Korean partners dates back to 2010. This partnership includes knowledge exchange, joint research projects, development of the UAE's nuclear regulatory framework, licensing, education, and training. The long-standing relationship highlights a commitment to advancing safe nuclear energy technology and regulatory frameworks.
This visit underscores FANR's dedication to fostering international cooperation in nuclear safety and regulation. By engaging with key Korean institutions, FANR aims to enhance its regulatory capabilities and contribute to the global advancement of nuclear technology.
