FANR Board Reviews Barakah Operations And Unveils Strategic Plan For 2027–2029
The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) Board of Management recently convened for its fifth meeting. During this session, Director-General Christer Viktorsson provided an update on significant achievements and international collaborations. He highlighted FANR's involvement in the 69th IAEA General Conference and its successful hosting of the International Commission on Radiological Protection Symposium in Abu Dhabi.
FANR's leadership role in chairing the IAEA Steering Committee on Regulatory Capacity Building was also noted. Additionally, the Secondary Standards Dosimetry Laboratory received international recognition, underscoring FANR's commitment to excellence in nuclear regulation. These engagements reflect FANR’s active participation in global nuclear safety discussions.

The Board reviewed the operational status of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant's four units. Updates included refueling schedules and maintenance plans for each unit. Regular inspections by FANR ensure compliance with regulatory standards, maintaining safe operations at the plant. This oversight is crucial for ensuring both safety and security in nuclear power generation.
During the meeting, FANR’s Draft Strategic Plan for 2027–2029 was presented. This plan outlines key priorities aimed at strengthening regulatory frameworks and advancing the UAE’s peaceful nuclear programme. The strategy focuses on enhancing regulatory control, promoting research, and building capacity within the sector.
Key objectives include fostering national and international cooperation, empowering human talent, and improving corporate efficiency. Integrating innovation and artificial intelligence is also a priority to reinforce FANR’s position as a leading nuclear regulator. These initiatives are designed to ensure that all regulated activities are conducted safely and securely.
Cooperation Plans for 2025
The Board discussed FANR's cooperation plans for 2025, which cover nuclear security, radiation safety, and research projects. Collaboration remains a cornerstone of the UAE Nuclear Programme. FANR aims to expand its cooperative efforts to encompass various regulatory matters, ensuring comprehensive oversight across all areas of nuclear regulation.
