UAE Pavilion At Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai Features Two Million Palm Fronds In Stunning Display
The UAE pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai presents a striking blend of tradition and innovation. It features a forest of wooden columns, crafted from over two million palm fronds sourced from the Middle East and North Africa. This architectural marvel tells a story of Emirati culture's generosity and resilience, embodying the theme "Earth to Ether" with its 90 towering columns.
The pavilion's design highlights sustainability by incorporating recycled date pits into its facades. Approximately two tonnes of this renewable material are used in the structure and entrances, showcasing an Emirati vision that merges authenticity with architectural creativity. The palm tree serves as both a cultural symbol and a renewable building material, reflecting a nation reinventing its heritage for the future.
Shaikha Al Ketbi, Creative Director and Deputy Commissioner General of the Pavilion, emphasised the use of eco-friendly materials directly linked to the local environment. She mentioned "Datecrete," an innovative flooring alternative made from ground date pits, as a sustainable substitute for cement. This purely Emirati innovation exemplifies their commitment to environmental responsibility.
Al Ketbi also highlighted "Date Form," developed from palm and date waste, used in various pavilion elements. This creative collaboration involved Emirati, Japanese, and international companies within the "Earth to Ether" group. The team integrated expertise in architecture, engineering, technology, carpentry, and design under Expo UAE Team's leadership.
The pavilion's natural spaces reflect cultural harmony through Japanese "Satoyama" forests with oak and red pine trees adorning the facade. These elements represent nature's coexistence with humans. Visitors can enjoy shade under the Pergola roof made from Japanese cedar wood, featuring patterns of Emirati "Khoos," a traditional art of weaving palm fronds.
Collaborative Efforts
This collaborative effort successfully brought together creative partners like Italian company Raymond, Atelier Brückner, Ro'ya, and global studio SLA. Their combined expertise resulted in a pavilion that seamlessly blends traditional Emirati craftsmanship with refined Japanese carpentry techniques.
The UAE pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai stands as a testament to cultural dialogue and innovation. It showcases how traditional materials can be reimagined for modern architecture while preserving cultural identity. This unique structure not only celebrates sustainability but also highlights the potential of collaborative creativity across borders.
