EWEC Opens Registration For Q1 2025 Clean Energy Certificates Auction
The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has begun registration for its Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) auction for the first quarter of 2025. This auction, which will conclude on 14th March 2025, supports the UAE's Year of Community 2025 objectives. These goals aim to harness the potential of individuals, families, and organisations to ensure a sustainable future.
CECs provide a way for individuals, businesses, and organisations to actively reduce their carbon footprint. By participating in this initiative, they contribute to Abu Dhabi's environmental health. The certificates are issued by the Department of Energy (DoE) in units of 1 megawatt-hour (MWh). They are the only recognised tool that verifies ownership of the benefits from using clean energy.

Francois Brice, Executive Director of Commercial and Fuel Management at EWEC, highlighted the growing interest in sustainability across Abu Dhabi. "The increasing demand for Clean Energy Certificates reflects the growing interest across Abu Dhabi in sustainability and emissions reduction. As a key enabler of the UAE's clean energy transition, EWEC is facilitating access to renewable and clean energy while actively driving real-world decarbonisation outcomes," he stated.
In 2024, EWEC made notable progress in promoting clean energy use throughout Abu Dhabi. A significant achievement was introducing wind-generated CECs. Additionally, agreements with major organisations in healthcare, utilities, and events sectors showcased how various industries are adopting sustainable energy solutions to meet their decarbonisation targets.
The CECs initiative aligns with efforts to enhance Abu Dhabi's leadership in clean energy adoption. It also supports emissions reduction across multiple industries. By participating in this programme, entities can certify that their electricity consumption comes from renewable or clean sources.
Brice further encouraged participation: "In this Year of Community, we encourage businesses, individuals, and organisations to take part in shaping a more sustainable future for all—one that benefits not just our economy but also the well-being of our communities and future generations."
