European Film Festival To Strengthen EU-UAE Cultural Ties In Abu Dhabi
The European Union Delegation to the United Arab Emirates, in collaboration with the Cultural Foundation in Abu Dhabi, has announced the organization of the European Film Festival. Scheduled from 12th to 16th May 2024, this event is set to bolster cultural relations and foster exchange between the UAE and EU countries through the powerful medium of cinema. The festival will feature a curated selection of 10 unique European films, representing a diverse array of cultures and cinematic traditions from EU member states including the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Slovenia, and Sweden.
Set against the backdrop of Abu Dhabi's Cultural Foundation theatre, the festival aims to provide a rich cultural experience at no cost to attendees. This initiative not only introduces Emirati audiences to European cinematic diversity but also facilitates an exchange of expertise and knowledge in cinema. Highlighting the festival's commitment to nurturing talent, a workshop on screenwriting and storytelling will be conducted by a European film expert. This workshop is designed to deepen ties between EU and UAE experts, promoting dialogue, cultural exchange, and supporting local talent through shared best practices and experiences.

EU Ambassador to the UAE, Lucie Berger, emphasized the influential role of cinema in modern society. "Cinema helps us see the world from different perspectives and learn about other cultures," she stated. Berger underscored the European Union's dedication to strengthening human connections through culture and art, including cinematography. The festival aims to showcase films that introduce Emirati audiences to the diverse cultures of European countries and their creative industries.
Berger also lauded the constructive cooperation with the Cultural Foundation in Abu Dhabi. As a significant cultural and historical landmark in Abu Dhabi, the Cultural Foundation is instrumental in preserving Emirati culture, heritage, and arts. It plays a crucial role in consolidating cultural exchange between the UAE and various countries around the world, including those within the EU.
The European Film Festival in Abu Dhabi is part of a broader initiative by the European Union to organize cultural events in over 90 countries globally. This effort reflects the EU's commitment to promoting values such as coexistence, tolerance, dialogue, and the exchange of ideas through cultural and artistic endeavors.
With free admission and a lineup of exceptional films from across Europe, the festival promises to be a significant cultural event for both Emirati audiences and international visitors alike. It offers a unique opportunity for emerging talents in cinema from both regions to engage with one another, learn from seasoned experts, and explore new narratives and storytelling techniques.
