Abu Dhabi Environment Agency Launches Falconry Season With Strict Regulations For 2024-2025
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) emphasises the need to comply with Law No. (22) of 2005 concerning hunting in Abu Dhabi and its related regulations. EAD, as the responsible authority, manages hunting activities under specific conditions. The agency allows only licensed falconers to hunt captive-bred Houbara bustards during the traditional falconry season from 20th October 2024 to 20th January 2025.
Hunting is permitted solely in designated open areas within Abu Dhabi Emirate. It must be conducted at least two kilometres away from main and secondary roads, restricted and private zones, forests, protected regions, petroleum and military sites, and residential areas. This ensures that hunting adheres to legal and environmental guidelines.

To support the wild hunting sector and preserve the heritage of falconry, EAD issues licences following Local Resolution No. (5) of 2021. Applicants for a falconry licence must be UAE citizens aged at least 18 years. Falcons used in hunts must be registered in the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment's Falcon Registration System.
Prospective participants can engage in this traditional sport after securing a falconry licence through the Abu Dhabi Unified Government Services System, 'TAMM’. Falconers apply via the 'TAMM’ smart application or website using their digital UAE Pass identity. They select 'Support Community and Environment' followed by 'Issuing a Falconry Licence'.
The law prohibits hunting all wild animals, birds, and reptiles within the emirate except for captive-bred Houbara bustards with a valid licence. It also forbids driving on vegetation or causing damage to it. Transferring a hunting licence to another person is not allowed.
Once approved, an electronic licence is issued immediately through the 'TAMM’ system. Licensees must follow environmental requirements and hunt only between sunrise and sunset during the specified season for one year only, set for 2024-2025.
Legal Framework for Sustainable Hunting
Law No. (22) of 2005 sets a framework ensuring hunting aligns with environmental standards aimed at preserving wild species without affecting their sustainability in natural habitats. Hunters must carry their licences while hunting and present them upon request by authorities.
The environment should remain clean; littering is prohibited. These measures ensure that traditional hunting practices do not harm wildlife or disrupt ecological balance while maintaining cultural heritage.
