UAE Ministry Of Energy And Infrastructure Launches Emirates Road Development Project To Alleviate Traffic Congestion
The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has unveiled a project to expand Emirates Road. This initiative is part of a national strategy to tackle traffic congestion. The UAE aims to build a smart, resilient infrastructure that supports economic growth and improves road network efficiency.
The project involves collaboration with local government bodies. It promises to enhance mobility, goods transport, and service flow nationwide. The expansion will stretch from Al Badee Interchange in Sharjah to Umm Al Quwain, increasing the road's capacity significantly.

Emirates Road will expand from three to five lanes in each direction over 25 kilometres. This change will boost capacity to around 9,000 vehicles per hour, marking a 65% increase. The upgrade also includes Interchange No. 7, featuring six new directional bridges.
These bridges will span 12.6 kilometres and accommodate 13,200 vehicles per hour. Additionally, collector roads on both sides of Emirates Road will be developed over 3.4 kilometres. The project is estimated at AED750 million and starts in September 2025.
The development aims to regulate traffic flow and ensure high safety standards for road users. Travel time for commuters from Ras Al Khaimah through Umm Al Quwain and Sharjah to Dubai could reduce by up to 45%. This project addresses traffic density on one of the busiest federal roads.
Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, highlighted the project's role in developing sustainable solutions for congestion. He stated that enhancing road efficiency is crucial for smoother traffic flow and national development.
Commitment to Sustainability
Al Mazrouei remarked: "This project represents a significant step toward realising the UAE’s vision of establishing an integrated road network that meets the needs of the population and economic growth." He emphasised its importance in reducing travel times and supporting sustainable development.
The project aligns with international standards in infrastructure design and execution. It ensures optimal traffic efficiency while maintaining quality and safety. The aim is to alleviate congestion-related emissions and improve living standards.
Future Prospects
Eng. Hassan Al Mansouri, Undersecretary for Infrastructure and Transport Affairs, noted that the project adheres to top international standards in planning. It focuses on long-term sustainability while enhancing transit movement between cities across the UAE.
Al Mansouri added that Emirates Road is a key federal route managed by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure. The project's completion will position the UAE among leading nations providing sustainable infrastructure meeting future needs.
This initiative reflects the UAE's commitment to innovative transportation solutions, aiming for an integrated logistics service aligned with national ambitions.
