UAE's EGA Acquires Majority Stake In US' Spectro Alloys Recycling Company
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), the largest 'premium aluminium’ producer in the world, has recently announced its acquisition of a significant share in Spectro Alloys Corporation, a notable American aluminium recycling company. Currently, the US ranks as the world's second-largest recycled aluminium market, making EGA's investment in Spectro Alloys a timely and strategic initiative to capitalize on this expanding market.
This strategic move not only expands EGA's operational footprint to four continents but also strengthens its presence in the United States, where it has already established a significant market presence. In 2023, EGA reported sales of approximately 550 thousand tonnes of primary aluminium in the US, underscoring the country's importance as one of its largest markets.
The acquisition involves EGA obtaining an 80 percent stake in Spectro Alloys, leaving the remaining 20 percent to the company’s original owner-managers. This investment aligns with EGA's green finance framework, introduced earlier this year, highlighting the company's commitment to environmentally responsible practices.
Spectro Alloys, recognized as a leading producer of secondary foundry alloy in the US, boasts an annual production of around 110 thousand tonnes of aluminium ingots. The company is undergoing an expansion at its Rosemount site, aiming to increase its secondary billets production capacity by 55 thousand tonnes per year by 2025.
The significance of this acquisition extends beyond just expanding EGA's global operations; it represents a strategic move into the growing recycled aluminium market in the United States. With recycled aluminium demand in the U.S. projected to hit 7.6 million tonnes annually by 2033, according to CRU, an independent business intelligence firm, this sector is poised for significant growth.
Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, CEO of EGA, emphasized the importance of aluminium in fostering a sustainable society and highlighted recycling as a critical strategic priority for the company. He stated, "Aluminium is an essential material for the development of a more sustainable society, and demand for low carbon primary and recycled aluminium will grow significantly over the decades ahead. Developing a global business in recycling is a key strategic priority for EGA.
"We are taking rapid and decisive action, now with recycling operations in both the United States and Europe and our greenfield plant in the UAE progressing well. I welcome our new colleagues in Minnesota to EGA."
Luke Palen, President of Spectro Alloys, remarked, "Becoming part of EGA is an exciting new chapter in Spectro Alloys' five decades-long journey. EGA's global resources and strength in marketing aluminium in the United States will accelerate Spectro's growth. We are now well-placed to develop even further as a leading recycling company, serving our customers even better, creating more job opportunities for people in Minnesota, and contributing to the production of aluminium products that are both environmentally responsible and Made in America."
The environmental benefits of recycling aluminium are substantial, requiring 95% less energy than producing new metal and significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This aligns with EGA's broader commitment to sustainability, evidenced by its recent acquisition of European specialty foundry Leichtmetall in May and the commencement of the UAE's largest aluminium recycling plant's construction late last year.
This move not only enhances its presence in the vital U.S. market but also supports its commitment to sustainable aluminium production. With the growing demand for recycled aluminium, EGA is well-positioned to play a leading role in the industry's future.
