EAD Delegation Strengthens Environmental Research Ties During Jaywun Mission In Bahrain
A team from the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), led by Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, recently visited Bahrain. The purpose was to boost regional collaboration in environmental research and share knowledge on marine environment protection. The visit included discussions with Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak bin Daina, Bahrain's Minister of Oil and Environment, focusing on joint programmes for biodiversity and tackling environmental challenges.
The EAD's marine research vessel, "Jaywun," embarked on a significant mission during this visit. It aimed to conduct pioneering scientific studies in the Arabian Gulf's waters. This mission marked the first time qualitative environmental surveys were carried out in UAE and Bahrain's territorial waters, enhancing sustainability efforts in the region.

During its seven-day voyage, "Jaywun" hosted experts from the Abu Dhabi Environmental Research Network. This network is crucial for addressing environmental challenges in Abu Dhabi and promoting sustainability principles. The trip also included 10 researchers from EAD and teams from Bahrain's Supreme Council for the Environment and Arabian Gulf University.
The mission collected over 150 samples from eight sites, conducting the first environmental DNA study of marine biodiversity in the southern Arabian Gulf. Acoustic surveys of the sea floor and water quality assessments were also performed to evaluate climate change impacts on marine ecosystems.
Additional research focused on heavy metal levels affecting marine life, nutrient enrichment rates for ecosystem balance, and microplastic particles' presence in Gulf waters. An assessment of transboundary sandstorms' impact on air and water quality was also conducted.
Engagement with Local Entities
While docked at Khalifa Bin Salman Port in Bahrain, "Jaywun" welcomed visits from local organisations such as the Supreme Council for Environment, Nawah Foundation, Bapco Energy, Arabian Gulf University, and others. School and university students also had the opportunity to visit the vessel.
Dr. Shaikha Al Dhaheri stated that EAD’s delegation visit to Bahrain is crucial for enhancing regional partnerships. She emphasised that exchanging expertise contributes to achieving shared goals of environmental sustainability. "Joining efforts and exchanging experiences between regional countries is the best way to achieve our common vision of preserving our marine resources," she said.
Future Prospects
EAD launched "Jaywun" in January 2023 as the Middle East's most advanced marine research vessel. It supports fish stock monitoring efforts while protecting biodiversity and marine habitats in the Emirates. Designed for diverse conditions, it plays a vital role in promoting scientific research and innovation.
"Through this pioneering research conducted onboard 'Jaywun', we will be able to strengthen our environmental database," Dr. Al Dhaheri added. She expressed optimism about continued cooperation with regional partners to ensure sustainable marine environments.
