Dubai International Airport (DXB) Earns Level 4 Sustainability Accreditation From ACI For Carbon Reduction Efforts

Dubai International Airport (DXB) has achieved a significant milestone in its environmental efforts by receiving the Level 4 "Transformation" accreditation from the Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme. As of September 2024, this recognition places DXB among the top 5% of airports globally that have reached this status, highlighting its commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

The "Transformation" certification is awarded to airports that demonstrate absolute reductions in emissions and foster systemic change with stakeholders. This aligns with Dubai Airports' strategic role in supporting the UAE's Net Zero 2050 strategy. Their focus is on minimising environmental impact and enhancing operational efficiency through decarbonisation, resource conservation, and advanced technologies.

DXB Achieves Top Sustainability Accreditation

Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, expressed pride in achieving this accreditation. He stated, "Achieving Level 4 'Transformation' accreditation underscores our firm commitment to embedding sustainability at the core of everything we do at Dubai Airports. This recognition not only highlights our progress in reducing our own carbon footprint but also reflects the strength of our partnerships in driving broader, systemic change across the aviation ecosystem."

Griffiths further emphasised that sustainability is a long-term strategy involving collaboration and innovation. He noted that their responsibility extends beyond operations, aiming to lead by example and foster a culture where all stakeholders contribute to a sustainable future. "Together, we are setting a new standard for what is possible in airport operations," he added.

Stefano Baronci, Director-General of ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East, praised Dubai Airports for its achievements. He remarked, "We congratulate Dubai Airports for its significant strides in reducing carbon emissions, setting a benchmark for airports across the region. By positioning itself as one of the leaders in efficient carbon management, Dubai Airports demonstrates a strong commitment to building a more sustainable future."

DXB's initiatives include collaborations with dnata and Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) to transition dnata's non-electric airside fleet to biodiesel blends. This move has cut carbon emissions by over 3,500 tonnes annually. Additionally, partnerships with Etihad Energy Services have improved energy efficiency through retrofitting buildings and integrating solar power.

Sustainable Innovations

The airport has also partnered with BEEAH Group to reduce landfill waste by 60% using an innovative food waste treatment plan. Furthermore, DXB's adoption of the 'Follow the Greens' system optimises aircraft taxiing to lower fuel consumption and emissions.

Active participation in 'Airports of Tomorrow', a World Economic Forum (WEF) and ACI initiative, aims to guide aviation towards net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The oneDXB Sustainability Alliance further supports these goals by exploring over 180 potential decarbonisation projects.

The Level 4 ACI Accreditation confirms Dubai Airports' leadership in sustainability efforts within the global airport community. DXB continues to set benchmarks for sustainable practices worldwide while supporting Dubai's and the UAE's leadership towards achieving Net Zero by 2050.
