DWTC Contributes AED 22.35 Billion To Dubai's Economy Through Large-Scale Events In 2024

The Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) is a key player in Dubai's economy, significantly boosting the emirate's GDP through a vibrant schedule of global business events. As Dubai aims to be among the top three cities for business and leisure by 2033, DWTC is crucial in driving economic growth and enhancing the city's global standing in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector.

In 2024, DWTC's Economic Impact Assessment highlighted its major contribution to Dubai’s economy with 100 large-scale exhibitions and conferences, marking a 32% increase from the previous year. These events attracted over 2 million attendees and generated AED22.35 billion in economic output, with AED13.04 billion retained as Gross Value Added (GVA) to Dubai’s GDP.

DWTC achieved record-breaking growth in 2024 with a 32% increase in both the number and scale of mega events. Over 2 million attended these flagship events, including 936,083 international visitors. This surge underscores Dubai’s growing reputation as a premier global business tourism destination.

The MICE sector plays a crucial role in enhancing Dubai's profile as a leading global hub, aligning with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33. The sector remains vital for an increasingly diversified economy driven by innovation. "Dubai will remain a global hub for ideas, investment, and enterprise – a city that turns opportunity into growth and enduring value," said H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

In 2024, DWTC hosted events that generated AED2.9 billion in sales within the MICE sector. This was driven by investments from event organisers and exhibitors in venue space, logistics, and other services. Notably, this direct spending catalysed nearly eight times its value in broader non-trade business activity across Dubai’s economy.

The Healthcare, Medical, and Scientific sector led with 21 events and 460,858 attendees, generating AED3.68 billion in GVA. Food, Hotel, and Catering followed with nine events and 283,119 participants contributing AED2.35 billion. Information Technology hosted five events with 280,967 attendees delivering AED1.55 billion in economic value.

International Participation and Economic Gains

The rise in international participation played a pivotal role in delivering broader socio-economic impact. In 2024 alone, direct spending across MICE-related services reached AED13.17 billion reflecting widespread economic gains across sectors like business entertainment (AED1.78 billion), retail trade (AED2.64 billion), restaurants (AED2.23 billion), hotel accommodation (AED3.41 billion), air travel and local transport (AED2.86 billion).

International attendees spent an average of AED9,833 per event—almost six times more than local participants—boosting travel-related sectors significantly through extended stays and hospitality expenses.

Geographic Reach of Attendees

The MENA region led international business event visitation at DWTC accounting for 32% of attendees followed by Europe at 27%. Asia Pacific contributed 10%, East Europe & Central Asia also at 10%, Indian subcontinent at another 10%, Africa at six percent while Americas accounted for five percent alongside Oceania representing one percent.

The top ten source markets included Saudi Arabia India China Turkey Oman UK Egypt Iran Russia Germany highlighting Dubai’s strategic position bridging East West connections globally.
