Dubai Achieves Record Tourism Growth With 18.72 Million International Visitors In 2024
Dubai experienced a significant increase in international visitors, reaching 18.72 million overnight guests from January to December 2024. This marks a 9% rise compared to 2023's 17.15 million, as reported by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET). The growth aligns with the strategic vision of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, aiming to position Dubai as a leading global hub for business and leisure.
H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum emphasised the importance of visionary leadership and collaboration between public and private sectors in achieving this milestone. He stated, "This achievement is the result of visionary leadership and strong collaboration between the public and private sectors." He further highlighted Dubai's commitment to maintaining growth through innovation, infrastructure development, talent acquisition, and market diversification.

The city's tourism sector thrived due to impactful partnerships, creative campaigns, and major events. These efforts align with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which aims to double the city's economy by 2033. Dubai also ranked as the top city globally for foreign direct investment (FDI) into tourism during H1 2024, according to Financial Times Ltd’s ‘fDi Markets’ data.
Helal Saeed Almarri, Director-General of DET, praised Dubai's performance in tourism for 2024 as a testament to its leadership's vision. He noted that "Dubai’s exceptional performance in the tourism sector for 2024 is a powerful testament to the visionary leadership of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum." The city successfully navigated global challenges through careful planning and agile policy implementation.
Dubai's hotel industry played a crucial role in supporting tourism growth. By December 2024, there were 154,016 rooms across 832 establishments compared to 150,291 rooms at 821 establishments in 2023. New openings like One&Only One Za’abeel contributed significantly to this expansion.
The hospitality sector maintained strong performance metrics in 2024. Average occupancy rose to 78.2%, up from 77.4% in 2023. Occupied room nights increased by 3%, reaching 43.03 million compared to the previous year's 41.70 million.
Global Campaigns and Partnerships
DET launched several global campaigns in 2024 to promote Dubai's diverse offerings. Notable campaigns included ‘Dubai: A Whole New You’ featuring Bollywood stars Saif and Sara Ali Khan, and ‘Dubai: Who’s Ready?’ starring Korean actors Park Shin-Hye and Park Hyung-Sik.
Strategic agreements with Emirates, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Hilton, and Emaar Hospitality Group aimed at enhancing visitor experiences were also signed by DET in 2024. These collaborations leveraged each organisation's global reach among potential travellers.
Awards and Recognition
Dubai received numerous accolades for its tourism achievements in 2024. At the World Travel Awards' annual event held in November that year; it was named both world-leading shopping destination as well as exhibition destination while Mina Rashid secured recognition as leading cruise port globally too!
The city's reputation as an accessible destination was consistently recognised across multiple indices worldwide throughout mid-2024; Numbeo ranked it among top five safest cities globally while Savills placed it first on their Executive Nomad Index list for long-term remote workers alike!
