Dubai RTA Unveils Major Bridge To Ease Traffic On Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) inaugurated a significant bridge as part of the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project on Sunday, 9th June 2024. This initiative includes constructing four bridges, totalling 2,874 meters in length and accommodating 17,600 vehicles per hour.
The newly completed two-lane bridge spans 666 meters and has a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour. It aims to enhance traffic flow by separating traffic from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to the service road leading to Jumeirah Golf Estate and Dubai Production City.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, announced that the project is 90% complete. "The project responds to directives from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai," he stated.
Al Tayer highlighted that H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, closely monitors the project's progress. The project serves as a crucial link between Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
Upon completion, the project will reduce travel time from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road towards Al Qusais and Deira by 40%, from 20 to 12 minutes during peak hours. It will also decrease travel time for motorists heading from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road towards Al Yalayes Street in the direction of Jebel Ali Port by 70%, from 21 minutes to 7 minutes.
Details of the Bridges
The project includes four bridges:
| Bridge | Length (meters) | Lanes | Capacity (vehicles/hour) |
|---|---|---|---|
| First Bridge | 943 | Two lanes in each direction | 8,000 |
| Second Bridge | 601 | Two lanes | 3,200 |
| Third Bridge | 664 | Two lanes | 3,200 |
| Fourth Bridge (Newly Opened) | 666 | Two lanes | 3,200 |
Additional Infrastructure Improvements
The project involves seven kilometres of road works, including improvements to surface intersections on the service road parallel to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. It also includes streetlights, traffic signals, traffic systems, stormwater drainage networks, and irrigation systems.
The Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project is part of RTA's master plan to develop strategic east-west traffic corridors and arterial roads. These corridors support Dubai's mobility networks and serve numerous development projects on both sides while accommodating current and future traffic volumes.
