Dubai Reef Fabricates First 1,000 Purpose-Built Reef Modules To Enhance Marine Biodiversity
The Dubai Reef project, a sustainable initiative by Dubai Can, has achieved a significant milestone with the creation of 1,000 reef modules. This development is part of its mission to boost marine biodiversity and ecological sustainability in Dubai's waters. The project was launched by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, aiming to deploy 20,000 reef modules over three years.
Ahmed Mohammed bin Thani, Director-General of DECCA, highlighted the project's success as a testament to collaboration and innovation. "Dubai Reef is a shining example of what can be achieved through collaboration and innovation," he stated. The initiative aligns with DECCA's mission to protect the environment and preserve Dubai’s natural resources.

Sheikh Dr. Saeed bin Ahmed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum from the Dubai Maritime Authority expressed pride in supporting such initiatives. He noted that the progress reflects Dubai’s vision for marine biodiversity. "The progress we have seen so far is the result of the unwavering commitment and tireless efforts of our strategic partners," he said.
The construction of these reef modules began in August 2024 with the Arab Marine Pyramid module type. HaejooX fabricated these on a site powered by biofuels, ensuring durability while promoting marine life. The materials used adhere to sustainable practices, supporting environmental goals.
The deployment of these initial 1,000 modules will commence in late November 2024. These modules vary in size to create diverse habitats for different fish species, ranging from 1.60 metres to 6.5 metres in height and placed at depths between 15 metres and 25 metres.
Leadership and Vision
Yousuf Lootah, CEO of Corporate Strategy and Performance at DET, emphasised this milestone as crucial for developing a resilient marine habitat. "The delivery of the first 1,000 reef modules marks an important milestone that demonstrates Dubai’s commitment," he remarked.
Ryan Paik, CEO of HaejooX, expressed excitement about reaching this stage on schedule. "As the official construction and fabrication contractor for Dubai Reef, we are thrilled to reach this important milestone," Paik commented.
Broader Impact on Marine Ecosystem
The project spans 600 square kilometres of Dubai's waters and is part of the broader Dubai Can initiative launched by Sheikh Hamdan. It aligns with the goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 to strengthen Dubai’s global position in business and leisure sectors.
This citywide effort involves partnerships across public and private sectors including DET, DECCA, DP World, Nakheel, PCFC, Emirates, and others. These collaborations are vital for achieving the project's ambitious environmental objectives.
The successful fabrication of these reef modules signifies a major step towards fostering a balanced marine ecosystem in Dubai's waters. This initiative not only supports marine biodiversity but also positions Dubai as a leader in marine sustainability globally.
