Dubai Municipality Awards AED 1.4 Billion Contracts For Stormwater Drainage Infrastructure Projects

Dubai Municipality has awarded contracts worth AED1.439 billion for four significant projects under the 'Tasreef' initiative. This move aligns with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's vision to enhance Dubai's infrastructure. The projects aim to develop and expand the city's stormwater drainage network, reinforcing Dubai's commitment to sustainable and climate-resilient infrastructure.

The Tasreef project is a major component of Dubai's strategy to improve its stormwater management system. It focuses on creating a unified collection system that is the most efficient in the region. The new contracts will cover key areas such as Nad Al Hamar, Al Garhoud, and Jumeirah, among others. These areas will benefit from enhanced drainage capacity and reduced maintenance costs.

Eng. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality, highlighted that these projects mark a significant step in upgrading Dubai’s stormwater drainage network. He stated: "Tasreef is a pioneering, strategic, and transformative project implemented by Dubai Municipality as part of its efforts to develop advanced and sustainable infrastructure projects in line with the highest standards of urban and spatial planning."

The Tasreef initiative aims to increase the drainage system's discharge capacity by 700% over the next century. This enhancement will solidify Dubai’s position as a leader in infrastructure resilience globally. The project also seeks to lower construction and operational costs while extending the lifespan of existing infrastructure.

More than 36 kilometres of new drainage lines will be constructed under these contracts. These lines will connect to the main Tasreef tunnel, integrating drainage systems across Dubai. This integration will significantly boost service levels for residents and businesses while reducing operational expenses.

The Tasreef project is designed with scalability in mind, ensuring it can adapt over the next 100 years. With an estimated total cost of AED30 billion, it represents Dubai’s largest investment in stormwater management infrastructure.

The commissioned works aim to provide innovative solutions for flood risk mitigation and enhance existing networks' efficiency. By improving service standards, these efforts support Dubai’s vision of becoming a more sustainable and liveable city.

This comprehensive approach aligns with Dubai’s ambition to be one of the world's most advanced cities regarding infrastructure readiness. The focus on sustainability ensures that future generations will benefit from these developments.
