Dubai Humanitarian And UN Resident Coordinator's Office Lead Session On Enhancing Global Humanitarian Cooperation

The Dubai Humanitarian organisation, in partnership with the UN Resident Coordinator's Office, recently held a significant session. This gathering included representatives from nations hosting major humanitarian hubs such as Australia, Cameroon, China, Ghana, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Panama, Spain, and the UAE. Leaders from global humanitarian bodies like the World Food Programme (WFP) and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) also attended.

The session took place at Dubai Humanitarian's Knowledge and Development Centre. It aimed to build on the First Conference of Countries Hosting the World’s Humanitarian Hubs during COP28. The focus was on enhancing cooperation among host countries by using shared resources and platforms like the Humanitarian Logistics Databank. This tool provides real-time data on prepositioned aid to improve crisis response efficiency worldwide.

Strengthening Global Humanitarian Cooperation in Dubai

Rashid Al Hamiri from the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs opened the session with remarks. Following him were speeches by Bérangère Boëll, UN Resident Coordinator for the UAE, and Giuseppe Saba, CEO of Dubai Humanitarian. They emphasised the importance of collaboration in addressing global humanitarian challenges effectively.

Giuseppe Saba expressed that their goal is to enhance cooperation among countries hosting humanitarian hubs through information sharing and best practices. "Our goal is to strengthen cooperation and coordination among countries that host humanitarian hubs by sharing information, best practices, and knowledge," he stated. This approach aims to ensure aid reaches those in need swiftly during crises.

Bérangère Boëll highlighted the critical nature of their mission amid rising humanitarian needs. "Today’s meeting is of utmost importance as we look to enhance our global response to humanitarian crises," she said. With over 360 million people requiring assistance in 2023 due to climate change and conflict impacts, their role has become increasingly vital.

Boëll noted that climate-related disasters displace about 20 million people annually. Conflicts have left millions without basic necessities globally. She stressed that with leadership from host countries, they can improve coordination and save lives through swift responses.

Exploring Operational Capabilities

The session concluded with a tour of Dubai Humanitarian’s operations. Participants gained insights into logistics and operational capabilities supporting emergency relief efforts worldwide. This firsthand experience showcased how these facilities contribute to effective crisis management globally.

The event underscored the importance of international collaboration in tackling complex emergencies caused by natural disasters and conflicts. By leveraging shared resources and knowledge, participating countries aim to create a unified approach for delivering timely aid where it's most needed.
