Dubai Reviews Berlin’s Urban Planning And Well-Being Practices For Future Development

Mattar Al Tayer, Commissioner General for the Infrastructure, Urban Planning, and Well-Being Pillar, recently visited Berlin to explore advanced urban planning practices. His focus was on enhancing infrastructure and integrated public transport systems. This visit aimed to gather insights from global leaders in these fields.

During his trip, Al Tayer examined the Radbahn Berlin project. This initiative is transforming spaces beneath metro bridges into vibrant corridors for cyclists and pedestrians. It combines infrastructure like metro stations with public amenities such as green spaces, improving user experience significantly.

Dubai Studies Berlin's Urban Planning Insights

Al Tayer also visited MOIA Company, a Volkswagen Group subsidiary. The company specialises in sustainable urban transport solutions. He learned about their plans to establish the first fully autonomous transportation network, which could revolutionise urban mobility.

The EUREF Campus in Berlin was another stop on Al Tayer's itinerary. This centre fosters collaboration among start-ups, research institutions, and government bodies. Their collective efforts address challenges related to renewable energy and urban sustainability.

At Schneider Electric’s exhibition, Al Tayer explored cutting-edge energy and automation solutions. These innovations contribute to a more sustainable future for cities globally. He reviewed smart energy monitoring systems, energy storage solutions, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

The visit concluded at the zeemobase laboratory, a multimodal station powered by renewable energy. This facility exemplifies how renewable resources can drive sustainable urban mobility solutions.

Strategic Insights for Dubai's Future

Al Tayer highlighted the importance of learning from global experiences in urban planning and transport. "We aim to benefit from the experiences of leading global cities in urban planning and to leverage these insights to achieve the objectives of the Dubai Urban Plan 2040, positioning Dubai as the best city in the world to live in," he stated.

The Dubai Urban Plan 2040 aims for significant improvements by 2040. It targets having 55% of residents living within 800 metres of public transport stations. Additionally, it seeks a 105% increase in green spaces and ensures over 80% of residents can access essential services within 20 minutes.

This visit underscores Dubai's commitment to adopting best practices from around the world. By integrating these insights into local strategies, Dubai aims to enhance sustainability and well-being for its residents.
