Dubai Customs Seizes Over 10.8 Million Counterfeit Items In 2024 To Protect Intellectual Property

Dubai Customs has made significant strides in protecting intellectual property rights, with 54 seizures involving 10.8 million counterfeit items in 2024. This initiative not only safeguards brands but also bolsters Dubai's investment climate by preventing losses from counterfeiting. The department's efforts are supported by advanced training for staff and inspectors, enhancing their ability to identify counterfeit goods efficiently.

Dr. Abdulla Busenad, Director-General of Dubai Customs, emphasised the emirate's thriving commercial sector, aligning with the economic goals set in Dubai’s D33 Economic Agenda. This agenda was launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. The emirate's extensive global network has led to a remarkable increase in foreign trade activities.

Dubai Customs Seizes Counterfeit Items in 2024

In 2024, Dubai witnessed a notable rise in freight activities compared to the previous year. Sea freight increased by 23%, land freight by 21%, and air freight by 11.3%. These figures highlight the emirate's expanding trade capabilities. Dubai Customs plays a crucial role in supporting this growth through digital customs services that enhance operational efficiency and strengthen international trade relationships.

The department achieved an impressive 49.2% growth in customs data in 2024 compared to the previous year. Its smart services have become globally recognised as a standard for modern customs practices. These advancements have significantly contributed to protecting intellectual property rights, with over 10.8 million counterfeit items seized during the year.

Dubai Customs employs cutting-edge innovations and technologies in its inspection processes, complemented by smart IT applications that optimise operational effectiveness. These technological advancements are crucial for maintaining high standards of efficiency and accuracy in detecting counterfeiting and piracy.

The department continues to safeguard Dubai’s borders effectively, achieving 3,273 seizures that play a vital role in protecting both the economy and society. In addition to these efforts, Dubai Customs has made substantial progress on key projects, completing 55 out of 84 initiatives planned for 2024.

Progress on Key Initiatives

This progress resulted in a 5% increase in handled cargo, an 8% rise in passenger bags processed, and a 9% increase in passengers handled compared to the previous year. These achievements underscore the department's commitment to enhancing operational efficiency while supporting Dubai’s economic vision.

"The emirate's commercial sector is thriving," said Dr. Abdulla Busenad, highlighting how these efforts align with Dubai’s broader economic objectives under the D33 Economic Agenda.
