Dubai Sets Ambitious Goal for 25% Self-Driving Transport by 2030
Mattar Al Tayer, the Commissioner-General for Infrastructure, Urban Planning and Well-Being Pillar and Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai, has recently shared insights into Dubai's ambitious Autonomous Transportation Strategy. The strategy aims to convert 25% of Dubai's total transportation into autonomous mode by 2030. Currently, the city has achieved a 9.4% conversion rate towards this goal. This announcement was made on the sidelines of the World Governments Summit 2024 in Dubai.
Despite facing significant global challenges in the self-driving transport sector, the RTA is steadfast in its commitment to realizing the vision of Dubai's leadership to become the smartest city globally. A notable milestone in this journey is the launch of the first trial run of self-driving Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles. This initiative positions Dubai as the pioneering city outside the US to deploy these autonomous vehicles.

In a groundbreaking move, the RTA has also entered into a definitive agreement with Skyports Infrastructure and Joby Aviation. This partnership is set to introduce passenger air taxi services in Dubai by 2026, making it the world's first city to incorporate air transport in urban areas through a sophisticated network of vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) stations for air taxis.
Four strategic locations have been identified for constructing air taxi stations: Dubai International Airport, Palm Jumeirah, Downtown Dubai, and Dubai Marina. These stations will feature innovative designs and offer various facilities, including take-off and landing areas, passenger zones, security procedures, and electric charging facilities. They will also be seamlessly integrated with existing public transportation networks.
The Joby Aviation S4 air taxi, designed to accommodate four passengers plus a pilot, will be showcased by the RTA. Equipped with six propellers and four battery packs, it boasts a maximum range of 161km and can reach speeds up to 321km per hour. Its design ensures less noise compared to helicopters and its VTOL capability makes it highly suitable for urban environments.
Regarding autonomous vehicles on Dubai's roads, Al Tayer revealed that there are currently five self-driving vehicles being tested on specific routes in the Jumeirah area under close supervision. These tests are a precursor to a broader public launch slated for later this year through a dedicated application.
The RTA's initiatives underscore its commitment to enhancing Dubai's transportation infrastructure through innovative technologies. By gradually increasing the number of autonomous vehicles and launching air taxi services, Dubai is set to redefine urban mobility on a global scale.
