DP World And ITOCHU Join Forces To Boost Logistics And Trade In Sub-Saharan Africa

DP World has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with ITOCHU Corporation, a major Japanese trading company. This partnership aims to enhance logistics and supply chain infrastructure in sub-Saharan Africa. The agreement was formalised at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama, Japan. Beat Simon, Group Chief Operating Officer of Logistics at DP World, and senior executives from ITOCHU were present for the signing.

The collaboration seeks to improve connectivity and market access throughout Africa, aiding Japanese businesses in establishing or expanding their operations on the continent. Initial discussions are centred around fleet management, logistics operations, supply chain optimisation, and the distribution of commodities and food products.

DP World and ITOCHU Strengthen Trade Links

DP World operates extensively across 48 countries in Africa, managing a network that includes ports, terminals, warehouses, and trucks. The company has already invested over $3 billion in infrastructure development across the continent. An additional $3 billion is planned for investment over the next three to five years to further enhance these capabilities.

ITOCHU Corporation is headquartered in Tokyo and has extensive experience in commodities, wholesale trade, and consumer goods within Africa. Its diverse portfolio includes textiles, machinery, energy, chemicals, foods, and general consumer goods. This broad base provides a solid foundation for supporting Japanese businesses looking to expand into African markets.

Beat Simon expressed enthusiasm about the partnership by stating: "Africa represents one of the most dynamic growth frontiers for global trade. This collaboration with ITOCHU reflects a shared vision to unlock value by combining our infrastructure and logistics expertise with ITOCHU’s commercial experience to create deeper connections between Africa and Japan."

Shinya Ishizuka, CEO of Africa Bloc at ITOCHU Corporation, added: "We hope that this collaboration will not only lead to further projects between the two parties but also serve as a bridge between Japanese companies seeking to expand into Africa and the African market."
