DP World Begins Operations At Tartus Port To Enhance Syria's Logistics Sector

DP World has started operations at Tartus Port after receiving it from the Syrian General Authority for Land and Sea Ports. This transition includes the introduction of the new harbour tug, Al Fath. The move is part of a 30-year concession agreement with plans for an $800 million investment, marking a significant international investment in Syria's logistics sector.

The concession aims to aid Syria's economic recovery by transforming Tartus into an efficient trade hub. DP World is conducting a thorough assessment of the port's infrastructure, including equipment and facilities. This involves technical surveys and operational studies to create a redevelopment roadmap. Immediate efforts focus on dredging access channels and upgrading handling equipment to meet cargo demand.

DP World Starts Operations at Tartus Port

Fahad Al Banna, CEO of DP World Tartus, stated, "We have embarked on a journey to transform Tartus Port into a world-class maritime gateway. Working closely with the Syrian government and General Authority for Land and Sea Ports, we are committed to applying DP World’s global expertise to build a modern and digitally-enabled port that will grow trade, create opportunities and firmly position Tartus as a key trade hub in the Eastern Mediterranean."

DP World plans to introduce digital platforms to boost operational efficiency at Tartus Port. Staff training and process optimisation will be implemented alongside these technological upgrades. These measures aim to improve productivity and reduce vessel turnaround times to meet international standards. Safety audits and training programmes will ensure high safety standards across all operations.

The newly arrived Al Fath tugboat plays a crucial role in guiding large vessels safely within confined spaces. It also serves as a first-response asset during marine emergencies. With its 22-metre length and 50-tonne bollard pull, Al Fath enhances berth approach control, reduces turnaround times, and improves overall port safety.

Long-term Development Goals

In the medium term, DP World's redevelopment programme includes upgrading infrastructure, expanding storage capacity, and investing in bulk handling systems. New containerised and non-containerised facilities will also be developed. These initiatives aim to establish Tartus Port as a key maritime hub in the Eastern Mediterranean, supporting regional and international trade flows.

Fahad Al Banna brings extensive experience from his previous role as Senior Vice President Container Operations at Jebel Ali Port. His appointment highlights DP World's commitment to applying global expertise locally, supporting long-term economic growth. Since joining DP World in 2005, he has held leadership roles in port operations and digital transformation.

Leadership Experience

Al Banna's achievements include enhancing port management systems for better automation and efficiency. He managed major projects like Container Terminal 4 at Jebel Ali Port, overseeing planning and equipment selection. As CEO of DP World Tartus, he will lead the modernisation efforts at Tartus Port with significant investments in infrastructure upgrades.

Reflecting on his new role, Fahad Al Banna said: "It is an honour to take on this responsibility at such an important moment in Syria’s history. We are grateful to the Syrian Port Authority for their support and collaboration throughout this time and confident that the redevelopment of Tartus Port will contribute to the country’s economic revival, support jobs and strengthen the flow of trade across the region."
