DEWA's Green Hydrogen Project Achieves Over 100 Tonnes Of Production Since Launch In 2021
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has achieved a significant milestone with its Green Hydrogen project, producing over 100 tonnes of green hydrogen since May 2021. This initiative has generated more than 1.15 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean electricity using a hydrogen gas engine, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by over 515 tonnes. Additionally, more than 11 tonnes were delivered to ENOC for use in hydrogen vehicles and industrial applications at Expo 2020 Dubai.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, highlighted that the Green Hydrogen project aligns with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. It aims to strengthen the UAE's competitive edge in hydrogen technology. The project supports several national strategies, including the National Hydrogen Strategy and the UAE's Net Zero 2050 Strategy. It also contributes to Dubai's Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, which target 100% clean energy production by mid-century.

The Green Hydrogen project is a pioneering effort in the Middle East and North Africa region, utilising solar energy to produce green hydrogen. Developed in partnership with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy, it generates approximately 20 kilogrammes of hydrogen per hour. The facility includes a gas tank capable of storing up to 12 hours' worth of hydrogen production, enabling nighttime power generation through a hydrogen gas motor with a capacity of around 300 kilowatts.
The project's success underscores its importance in enhancing the UAE's and Dubai's competitiveness in green hydrogen technology. According to the Green Hydrogen Report 2024 by Alvarez & Marsal, the UAE leads globally in green hydrogen competitiveness. This initiative is designed to support future applications across various sectors such as energy, transport, and industry.
Al Tayer stated, "The Green Hydrogen project supports the forward-looking vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to consolidate the competitive advantages of the UAE in the field of hydrogen." This statement highlights how the project aligns with broader strategic goals aimed at improving air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions through sustainable transport solutions under Dubai's Green Mobility Strategy 2030.
This initiative not only strengthens DEWA’s efforts but also positions Dubai as a leader in sustainable energy solutions within the region. By integrating green hydrogen into various sectors, it paves the way for innovative applications that contribute to environmental sustainability while supporting economic growth.
