DEWA Reviews Integration Of Photovoltaic Solar Panels With Battery Energy Storage In The United States

A team led by Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), recently visited solar energy sites in California, USA. They inspected Southern Power’s Garland Solar Facility and Clearway Energy Group’s Daggett Solar Site. These facilities use photovoltaic solar panels combined with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The goal was to learn from global best practices to support similar projects in Dubai.

DEWA is actively producing clean energy using various technologies. This includes photovoltaic solar panels and Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technologies, which feature a central tower unit and three parabolic trough units. These technologies allow for large-scale electricity generation around the clock.

DEWA Inspects Solar Technologies in the US

Al Tayer expressed satisfaction in enhancing cooperation with American energy companies. He stated, "We are pleased to strengthen strategic and constructive cooperation with US energy companies, in line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to benefit from technologies, enhance performance, and improve the quality of life." This collaboration aligns with Dubai's vision for sustainable development.

The partnership supports both the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050. These initiatives aim for a complete transition to clean energy production by 2050. DEWA is translating Dubai's ambitious visions into significant projects and opportunities in energy and water sectors.

Al Tayer also highlighted DEWA's dedication to innovation: "We are committed to exchanging best practices and expertise, and advancing new technologies and solutions that enhance efficiency and sustainability in the electricity sector, reducing carbon emissions in the process of electricity generation." This commitment is crucial for improving efficiency while reducing carbon emissions during electricity production.

One major project under this vision is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. It is set to become the largest single-site solar park globally, aiming for a production capacity exceeding 5,000 megawatts by 2030. This project exemplifies DEWA's efforts towards sustainable energy solutions.

The visit to California underscores DEWA's proactive approach in learning from international experiences. By integrating advanced technologies into their operations, they aim to enhance Dubai's clean energy capabilities significantly.
