COP29 Commences Tomorrow In Baku With Strong UAE Participation For Climate Action Goals

The 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP29, is scheduled in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11th to 22nd November 2024. This event aims to limit global warming to 1.5°C by emphasising the need for climate action investment. The strategy involves enhancing national plans and transparency while promoting effective financing to cut emissions and address climate impacts.

At COP29, the UAE will continue its support for Azerbaijan since it was announced as the host. The UAE's involvement aims to strengthen cooperation and collective action towards a more resilient climate future. During COP29, the UAE will present its sustainability journey through an interactive national pavilion, showcasing efforts in sustainable development and strategies balancing economic growth with environmental preservation.

UAE Takes Active Role at COP29 in Baku

A key focus at COP29 will be the "Global Climate Finance Framework," central to negotiations. The UAE is pushing for increased climate finance, especially for the Global South and vulnerable communities adapting to climate change. According to the UN, negotiators in Baku must agree on a new climate finance goal ensuring all countries can take stronger climate action.

The conference aims to unlock trillions needed by developing nations to reduce carbon emissions and adapt to climate change impacts. A packed schedule of negotiations, speeches, events, and panel discussions is planned at the conference site. It will be divided into a Green Zone open to the public and a Blue Zone managed by the UN.

COP28 in the UAE established a shared global approach through the "UAE Consensus" and climate action agenda. This engaged diverse voices worldwide, leading a new model for addressing climate issues. The UAE's participation in COP29 builds on these efforts, enhancing collective ambitions and conveying relevant parties' ideas for effective global resilience.

The Paris Agreement from COP21 in 2015 set a goal of reducing global warming below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, aiming for 1.5°C. Countries agreed on increasingly ambitious actions every five years. Updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) are due in 2025, contributing to reduced emissions and renewable energy adoption.

Enhancing Global Resilience

COP29's Presidency highlights operationalising the Loss and Damage Fund for vulnerable communities like Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs). It calls for enhanced NDCs aligned with 1.5°C targets by 2025 and urges all countries to have National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) by then.

The Presidency stresses scaling up adaptation finance and encourages global financial institutions and private sectors to increase climate finance investments in green innovation. Each year’s COP builds on previous progress, strengthening aspirations based on scientific findings about human activity's role in the crisis.

Diverse Programming at COP29

COP29 has released comprehensive programming for both Blue and Green Zones, showcasing events shaping the global climate agenda. The Blue Zone hosts formal negotiations while the Green Zone features exhibitions, workshops, cultural events related to climate change open to public participation.

Visitors can engage in panels, workshops, keynote speeches aligning with thematic days in the Green Zone. Official partners aim to inspire climate conversation among stakeholders from public and private sectors during these events.
