COP28 President Receives Prestigious Global Energy Transition Impact Award
Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, the Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and COP28 President, has been honoured with the 'Global Energy Transition Impact Award' by the World Energy Council. This prestigious accolade is in recognition of his pivotal role in steering the energy transition forward, underpinned by the UAE Consensus. His efforts have notably included the initiation of Net Zero energy transition alliances spanning various sectors, marking a significant stride in global climate action.
The award serves as a testament to the UAE leadership's dedication to fostering a responsible shift towards renewable energy sources, as outlined in the UAE Consensus. This framework has emerged as a cornerstone for international climate initiatives, aiming to cap the global temperature increase at 1.5°C. It advocates for a gradual move away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy, setting specific milestones for this transformation.
At the COP28 conference, Dr. Al Jaber underscored the comprehensive nature of the agreement, which saw active participation from diverse stakeholders, including those from the oil and gas industry. He stressed the urgency of translating this landmark consensus into tangible actions, especially considering the anticipated surge in global energy demand.
Despite the notable growth in wind and solar energy sectors, hydrocarbons continue to occupy a significant share of the global energy landscape. Dr. Al Jaber called for ambitious emission-reduction goals and increased collaboration across sectors to effectively reduce carbon emissions from both production and consumption of energy.
The COP28 President advocated for a holistic approach to the energy transition, involving key players from technology firms, financial institutions, civil society, and government bodies. He highlighted the critical role of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence in enhancing efficiency and expediting the shift towards sustainable energy sources.
Recognizing that the journey towards a sustainable energy future will unfold at varying speeds across different regions, Dr. Al Jaber pointed out the opportunities this transition presents for spawning new industries, generating employment, and paving the way for a low-carbon economy through strategic investments.
In his concluding remarks, Dr. Al Jaber urged all parties to rally behind practical steps that are in line with scientific guidelines to ensure global temperatures remain within safe limits. He emphasized that collective effort is essential for driving human progress and securing a successful transition to sustainable energy sources.
This recognition by the World Energy Council not only highlights Dr. Al Jaber's contributions but also reinforces the UAE's leading position in promoting environmental sustainability and combating climate change on a global scale.
