COP28 Demonstrates the Power of Collective Action in Climate and Biodiversity Initiatives

Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, the President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP28, recently shed light on the ambitious post-COP28 agenda. This agenda underscores the necessity of multi-level climate action and the involvement of all societal sectors. Al Mubarak proudly announced the expansion of the Climate Action to Halt Biodiversity Loss initiative, which now boasts over 200 global commitments.

During her discourse, Al Mubarak stressed the critical role of collaboration and commitment in realizing collective objectives for a just, resilient, and sustainable future. She brought attention to the "UAE Consensus," a landmark agreement endorsed by 198 parties worldwide. This consensus introduces new benchmarks for global climate action, including transitioning responsibly to a fossil-free energy system and halting deforestation by 2030. It also highlights the significance of nature-based solutions and aligns with international policies such as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

COP28: United for Climate and Nature

Al Mubarak underscored the importance of financial mobilization for nature-related endeavors and its influence on global climate initiatives. She spotlighted the mobilization of over $2.7 billion for nature conservation projects at COP28, alongside unprecedented investment plans by forest-rich nations. The UAE's commitment was exemplified through a $100 million pledge for forest conservation efforts in Indonesia, South America, and Africa, underlining the urgent need for substantial investments in nature conservation.

The involvement of indigenous peoples in COP28 was highlighted as crucial for protecting global biodiversity. Their participation was emphasized through various events and initiatives, stressing the importance of channeling funding directly to these communities. Furthermore, Al Mubarak advocated for women's active participation in climate action and called for gender-sensitive approaches to meet climate commitments effectively.

The cooperation between national and local governments was another focal point at COP28, leading to the initiation of the Coalition for High Ambition Multilevel Partnerships (CHAMP) for Climate Action. This initiative seeks to synchronize local and national government efforts in implementing complementary climate actions tailored to local community needs.

Al Mubarak also showcased the UAE's dedication to spearheading climate transition initiatives on both local and global scales. This includes efforts like the UAE Urban Environment Plan and the "Utility Alliance to Support Climate Neutrality (UNEZA)." The appointment of Nigar Arpadarai as UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP29 marks a collaborative push to elevate stakeholder ambition and build upon COP28's successes.

In her concluding remarks, Al Mubarak reiterated the power of collective action and called for an all-encompassing approach that includes everyone in climate action endeavors. She urged for ongoing collaboration to forge a sustainable and resilient future for all communities worldwide.
