Colombia's President Gustavo Petro Calls For Global Action On AI And Climate Challenges

President Gustavo Petro Urrego of Colombia addressed the World Governments Summit, urging global leaders to tackle the challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI) and climate change. He highlighted AI's rapid growth and its potential to disrupt labour markets, displacing millions of workers and increasing social tensions. Urrego warned that without regulation, AI could lead to significant job losses and increased migration as climate change makes regions uninhabitable.

Urrego drew a connection between AI and climate issues, warning that increased AI-driven productivity might boost fossil fuel reliance. This could cause an environmental collapse, potentially displacing up to 3 billion people by 2070. He argued for a shift in global governance, stating that the traditional nation-state model is inadequate for these interconnected problems.

Gustavo Petro Urges Action on AI and Climate

The Colombian president proposed establishing a global multilateral authority to regulate AI and manage climate challenges. He emphasised the need for humanity to act as a unified political entity. Urrego stressed that digital knowledge stored in the cloud should be governed by global oversight rather than private or national interests to prevent economic and social disasters.

Urrego underscored the importance of nurturing human creativity and freedom to counterbalance AI's mechanisation. "The only way to fight against artificial intelligence is through creation," he stated. He urged governments to focus on policies that protect workers and promote sustainable development, asserting that genuine human innovation can counteract automated systems' risks.

His speech concluded with a call for urgent action, warning of crises like overproduction, environmental exploitation, and unprecedented displacement if these challenges aren't addressed. Urrego highlighted the need for international cooperation to ensure humanity's survival alongside the planet's well-being.

This year's summit, themed 'Shaping Future Governments', gathers over 30 heads of state and government, more than 80 international organisations, and 140 government delegations. The agenda includes 21 forums exploring future trends, over 200 interactive sessions with more than 300 speakers—including presidents, ministers, experts—and over 30 ministerial meetings attended by over 400 ministers.

The summit will continue under this theme until February 13th.
