Filmmakers Share Insights On Collaboration In Directing At Xposure 2025

A panel of acclaimed filmmakers at the 9th International Photography Festival, Xposure, in Aljada, Sharjah, discussed the significance of collaboration in filmmaking. The session, "Directing with Purpose: Shaping the Vision," was moderated by American film producer Franklin Leonard. It featured insights from Emirati filmmaker Maitha Alawadi, American writer-actor Travon Free, and Indian filmmaker Neel Kumar.

Alawadi emphasised the importance of teamwork throughout the filmmaking process. She stated, "Every person in the film team is like family, and every idea matters—even from child actors. Sometimes, they surprise you, and you need to step back and consider what’s best for the project." Her passion for animation and fantasy drives her casting choices to make Emirati culture relatable globally.

Insights on Directing Collaboration at Xposure 2025

Travon Free shared his journey from writing and acting to directing. He highlighted how watching films enhances his understanding of different directing styles. "I look for visually interesting elements to keep things fresh. Watching films helps me understand different directors. The more I watch, the better I see how to use—or avoid—the camera in certain ways," he explained.

Kumar echoed similar sentiments on collaboration and creativity. He believes that removing ego from decision-making is crucial. "When you have a powerful idea, everything falls into place. A good director has strong psychology. If a concept intrigues me, it will resonate with actors too," he said.

The panel also discussed balancing artistic integrity with production challenges. Alawadi finds excitement in casting as it helps convey her vision accurately. She noted that seeing actual locations can alter her perspective and that AI aids character development.

Free stressed the importance of involving everyone in the creative process, including interns. "Even interns have a say in my process," he mentioned. This approach ensures diverse perspectives contribute to the final product.

Insights on Directing Techniques

Kumar compared character development to Michelangelo sculpting David, where unnecessary parts are removed to let the story naturally evolve through actors’ performances. This analogy highlights his belief in allowing stories to shape organically.

The festival is organised by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau and continues until 26th February 2025. It serves as a platform for filmmakers to share their experiences and insights into effective directing techniques.
