CMA Terminals Khalifa Port Inaugurated By Sheikh Khaled Bin Mohamed Bin Zayed To Boost Trade And Logistics
H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, has officially opened the CMA Terminals Khalifa Port. This AED3.1 billion (US$845 million) container terminal is a joint venture between CMA CGM Group's subsidiary, CMA Terminals (70%), and Abu Dhabi Ports (30%). The facility significantly enhances Abu Dhabi's position as a global trade hub.
The inauguration of the new terminal marks a significant milestone in the development of Khalifa Port, which opened in December 2012. Over 12 years, it has grown into one of the world's most efficient commercial ports. The port now features advanced infrastructure like automated gates and integrated systems that boost efficiency and sustainability.
CMA Terminals Khalifa Port incorporates state-of-the-art technology with sustainability principles. It includes eight advanced Ship to Shore cranes and 20 Electric Rubber Tyred Gantry cranes. These features position Khalifa Port as one of the most technologically advanced commercial ports globally, highlighting Abu Dhabi’s role in sustainable trade.
The facility also boasts shore-power for vessels to reduce emissions and several solar-panel areas contributing to its energy mix. Notably, it houses the region’s first net zero carbon administration building powered by renewable energy sources, which won an award in 2022 from the MENA Green Building Awards.
Sheikh Khaled emphasised the project's importance in promoting sustainable economic growth and diversifying the national economy. He noted its role in establishing Abu Dhabi as a leading hub for trade and logistics services while attracting international investments in vital infrastructure sectors.
The addition of this facility increases Khalifa Port’s annual container capacity by 23%, reaching nearly 10 million TEUs. The terminal is also ready for rail connectivity, further enhancing its status as a major regional gateway.
Partnerships and Future Prospects
A memorandum of understanding was signed by Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of CMA CGM Group, and Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, Managing Director and Group CEO of AD Ports Group. This agreement aims to develop maritime training and education within the UAE and GCC region.
CMA CGM will support training at Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy by placing cadets on its flagship vessels. This collaboration underscores a commitment to fostering local talent in maritime sectors.
Statements from Key Stakeholders
Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, Chairman of AD Ports Group, expressed honour at welcoming Sheikh Khaled to the inauguration. He stated that this development solidifies the UAE's position as a premier investment destination and key partner for global players.
Rodolphe Saadé remarked that this strategic infrastructure would boost shipping activities across the region. "Together with our partner AD Ports Group," he said, "we are pleased to deliver a modern terminal with a strong focus on innovation and sustainability."
Future Developments
The opening marks Phase 1 completion of CMA CGM's new terminal project at Khalifa Port. An initial quay wall measuring 800 metres long with 18.5 metres depth adds capacity for 1.8 million TEUs annually.
Khalifa Port now covers over 6.3 sq km with 41 quay cranes, 159 yard cranes, an 11.7km quay wall, and a breakwater length of 3.8km. This expansion reinforces its status as one of the region’s leading port trade hubs.
