Exclusive: Cloudera CEO Discusses Digital Transformation In The GCC

"When I first came to Dubai, Sheikh Zayed Road had just two or three buildings. Now, the pace of growth is staggering." Much like the cities that have risen from the sands, Cloudera empowers business to scale their data strategies from the ground up, bringing the future closer to reality with every innovation." says Charles Sansbury, CEO of Cloudera

In this landscape of rapid transformation, one company is quietly orchestrating a revolution beneath the surface: Cloudera. The head in-charge in this data-driven transformation is Charles Sansbury, whose vision is reconceptualizing ways in which the region's most influential organizations tap into the true power of data.

Cloudera s Role in GCC s Digital Leap

What sets Sansbury's vision in concrete? It isn't all about technology; it's about creating an impact.

But Sansbury, as far as the GCC's AI-driven future is concerned, captures it best: "Cloudera is like the engine that powers the data machinery of the biggest companies in the world." That's a somewhat bold claim, but befitting of an organization that has helped some of the most pioneering businesses in the Middle East grasp the latest technologies at an unprecedented scale. What sets the GCC apart, he observes, is its blank-slate infrastructure-the advantage that allows these nations to leapfrog into the future.

Sansbury's strategy would let the organization unlock the full potential of their data reserves. "We help businesses unlock the gold hidden in their data stores," he says, "and the focus of the region on digital transformation means the region presents an exciting time for innovation." With Cloudera's hybrid data platform right at the center, organizations across the GCC are best positioned to drive the rest of the world in making decisions based on data, adopting artificial intelligence, and innovating smart cities.

He explains how GCC nations, with their forward-looking strategies and infrastructures built on clean slates, have an edge in the adoption of AI and advanced analytics-a statement that has resonated well with the region's stride towards the attainment of goals, just like Saudi Vision 2030.

Cloudera has earned itself a reputation as a leading hybrid data platform provider. The company acts as the backbone for key financial institutions, government sectors, and smart city projects in the Middle East. "We enable innovative businesses to unlock insights from their treasure trove of data," Sansbury says. "As innovation is being adopted across the GCC on an unprecedented scale, we are equipping organisations with AI and machine learning to make critical business decisions."

A Region Ready for Digital Transformation

From the fast and rapid expansion of digital infrastructure to Sansbury himself, many could hardly have imagined how fast the GCC would grow. Indeed, according to Sansbury, the change from what he had seen in the past two decades has been "incredible". He says GCC countries, especially the UAE and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, have leaped so far ahead from traditional digital frameworks to more modern and cutting-edge technology that few places globally can keep their pace.

Cloudera s Role in GCC s Digital Leap

"Take the Scandinavian countries as an example," Sansbury reflects. "They went from being the worst in telecommunications infrastructure to the best in the world when wireless communication came along. The same thing is going on here with data and AI." GCC countries, unhindered by legacy systems, are now embracing the most advanced AI solutions and digital architectures, putting themselves at the forefront of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Sansbury is swift to declare the commitment of Cloudera to the region's digital projects: "From financial services to smart cities, we are deeply ingrained with the region's most innovative sectors. Our customers like Emirates NBD and Saudi Telecom are driving the lead in applying AI to transform their businesses. Cloudera's hybrid platform helps them manage complex data environments while having the flexibility to scale with their growing AI ambitions."

Enabling Data Scientists of Tomorrow

The steep learning curve in integrating advanced data systems continues to be one of the most daunting challenges as companies embark on their journeys in AI. Sansbury acknowledged this when he said, "The work of integrating AI is hard, and often underestimated. But it's a necessary journey." He reiterated that Cloudera focuses on enabling data scientists and business users to leverage sophisticated analytical tools that will drive actionable insights.

Cloudera's platform equips organizations with the means to manage data estates efficiently, while making data scientists efficient with machine learning (ML) capabilities that let them run a wide variety of models. As Sansbury makes sure to mention, "Our goal is to enable companies to derive actionable insights from their data while navigating the complexities of AI and ML integration.

In fact, the ability to derive insight from complex data sets has already produced real-world returns in industries like pharmaceutical research. "One of our customers was a pharmaceutical company that was able to reduce its drug discovery time by months," Sansbury says. "By using natural language processing and incorporating 30 years of global data, they were able to determine correlations between organic compounds and genes at a speed never before possible, thereby saving hundreds of millions in R&D costs.

AI's Value Proposition

Investments in AI are expensive, especially in computational power and energy. Sansbury is open: companies today are at an early stage to understand the real return on investment from these technologies. "Right now, we're all excited by what AI can do, but it's still early. We don't fully know which AI models will deliver the best return on investment yet," he says.

Still, Sansbury remains positive about AI's future in the region. According to him, though organisations were still finding out how to apply AI meaningfully, the long-term potential was undeniable. "We're seeing early signs of success in industries like pharmaceuticals and financial services, but the broader applications are just beginning to emerge."

As he sees it, Cloudera's role is to arm companies with the right tools to explore these nascent applications. "We're selling the shovels to the people doing the mining," Sansbury quips. "We don't know which mines will be successful, but we know everyone will need a shovel."

AI and the Future of Smart Cities

It is without a doubt that Cloudera has already started playing a serious role in many of the region's giga-projects with the GCC's commitment toward developing AI-powered smart cities. Cloudera's data platform helps organizations optimize everything from energy usage to the flow of traffic, says Sansbury, laying the bedrock for more efficient urban ecosystems.

He draws an interesting parallel to the traffic management problem, citing that a little betterment in efficiency creates outsized results. "Research says a traffic jam can occur due to just 7% more cars than the number of cars a road is designed for. Imagine if AI could help in optimizing the flow of traffic to prevent that 7% increase from creating gridlock," he muses.

The power of smart cities extends beyond traffic management into domains such as energy efficiency and building automation. Sansbury reinforces the point that Cloudera's hybrid data platform enables organizations to drive value from multiple types of data and equips them with the capability to apply AI to real-world problems: "The future of smart cities will be defined by how well we can collect and analyze data to make cities more livable, efficient, and sustainable.

Saudi Arabia's AI Ambitions

Talking about Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, the usually composed Sansbury becomes particularly animated as he relates the pace of innovation that he has witnessed in Riyadh. "Saudi Arabia is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world," he says. "They're taking lessons from how cities like Dubai have grown, and their focus on AI and digital transformation is putting them firmly on the global map.

Cloudera is already working with some of Saudi Arabia's biggest firms, including providing the data frameworks necessary to power their AI-driven ambitions. Projects such as KAFD and NEOM's The Line represent how the country is leveraging data to optimize urban living and economic growth. "These smart cities will redefine city experiences, and right at the heart of it is Cloudera's platform," adds Sansbury.

The way forward is through data-the future of everything. To Sansbury, the future of the GCC will be intrinsically linked to harnessing data. So, as all these countries are continuing to push the boundaries of AI and digital innovation, Cloudera's hybrid platform will most surely remain an essential element in this journey.

"At Cloudera, we envision ourselves to be the digital architects of smart cities of tomorrow; hence, we are contributing to help the GCC build a future where data is the bedrock for progress," concludes Sansbury. The possibilities for innovation in the region look limitless with such a vision.
