Türkiye's Electric Railway Project On Track As British Steel Lands Major Multi-Million Deal
British Steel, a major UK steelmaker, has recently secured a substantial contract to supply tracks for a cutting-edge high-speed electric railway in Türkiye. This ambitious project aims to connect Mersin with Adana, Osmaniye, and Gaziantep in the southern part of the country. The contract involves the delivery of tens of thousands of tons of rails that will form the backbone of this new transportation link.
The initiative is set to transform the way cargo and passengers move across the region, linking Türkiye's second-largest container port in Mersin with cities situated over 240 kilometers away. A significant aspect of this project is its environmental benefit, with an expected reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by more than 150,000 tons annually. This development underscores a global shift towards more sustainable modes of transportation and the pivotal role of electrification in achieving these objectives.
At the helm of British Steel, President and Chief Xijun Cao expressed enthusiasm about the company's involvement in such a pivotal. Cao highlighted the dual benefits of the project: enhancing Southern Türkiye's transport infrastructure and delivering substantial environmental improvements. British Steel's commitment to providing high-quality rail solutions is evident in their readiness to meet the challenges and requirements of this ambitious project.
Crucial to bringing this project to fruition is the support from U.K. Export Finance (UKEF), the U.K. government's export credit agency. UKEF has committed approximately 680 million pounds ($857.20 million) to support the construction of the 286-kilometer railway. This financial backing is provided through UKEF's Buyer Credit Facility, enabling Rönesans Holding to lead the construction on behalf of the Turkish Ministry of Transport, with British Steel as a key supplier.
Rönesans Holding's Role and Environmental Impact
Erman Ilıcak, President of Rönesans Holding, elaborated on the transformative impact of upgrading the existing railway to a high-standard line. This upgrade is anticipated to significantly reduce the environmental footprint of transportation in the area, providing a greener travel option and boosting the region's industrial connectivity and trade. The project aligns with Türkiye's national environmental goals, showcasing Rönesans Holding's dedication to supporting sustainable infrastructure advancements.
The collaboration between British and Turkish entities has unlocked 781 million euros in financing for the project, indicative of the strong partnership between the two countries in promoting exports and services. This venture not only enhances the cooperation between Türkiye and the U.K. but also sets the stage for further international collaborations.
Looking Ahead: A New Partnership
Craig Harvey, British Steel's Commercial Director for Rail, sees this contract as the beginning of a promising partnership between British Steel, UKEF, and international contractors. The combination of high-quality rail production and leading financial solutions positions British Steel as a prime candidate for supplying global markets and networks. This collaboration represents a significant step forward in the development of sustainable, high-speed rail infrastructure on an international scale.
The Mersin-Adana-Gaziantep High-Speed Railway project is a testament to the synergistic potential of international cooperation, sustainable development, and technological innovation in transforming regional transport infrastructures.
