AI-Powered Autonomous Operations Advance Borouge At Ruwais With Honeywell Collaboration

Borouge Plc has completed a proof of concept for AI-powered autonomous operations at its Ruwais facility, working with Honeywell. The live trial shows potential gains in efficiency, reliability and costs, while also cutting energy use and emissions, supporting ADNOC’s plan to become the most AI-enabled energy company.

The project aligns with Borouge’s wider strategy to improve operational performance, maintain competitiveness and increase long-term value for shareholders. It forms a central part of the company’s AI, Digitalisation & Technology (AIDT) programme, which targets $575 million in value generation in 2025 through AI and digital initiatives.

Building on trials conducted in 2025, the proof of concept represents a step towards what Borouge describes as the petrochemical industry’s first AI-driven control room supporting full-scale, real-time operations. The technology was tested in a live production environment at Ruwais to validate performance under actual operating conditions.

According to Borouge, the AI-powered autonomous operations concept indicates scope to increase efficiency by up to 20 percent and reduce downtime by 20 percent. Operating costs could fall by up to 15 percent. The system is also designed to improve process safety and encourage more sustainable operations through lower energy use and fewer related emissions.

Hazeem Sultan Al Suwaidi, Chief Executive Officer of Borouge, said, "This milestone reinforces Borouge’s commitment to accelerating growth, enhancing shareholder value, and driving efficiency. By advancing autonomous operations in partnership with Honeywell, we are strengthening our competitive position, supporting ADNOC’s ambition to become the world’s most AI-enabled energy company," said Hazeem Sultan Al Suwaidi, Chief Executive Officer of Borouge.

Jim Masso, President and CEO of Honeywell Process Automation, said, "Our collaboration with Borouge demonstrates how AI-enabled autonomous operations can be deployed safely and effectively in a live production environment. This milestone highlights the potential of advanced connected solutions to deliver meaningful improvements in efficiency, reliability and operational performance at scale."

Following the successful proof of concept with Honeywell, Borouge plans to continue work on AI-powered autonomous operations at Ruwais. The company will further test the technology, examine wider operational benefits and evaluate options to deploy the system across additional facilities at the complex.
