Baltic Eagle Offshore Wind Farm Installs First Of 50 Turbines
The Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm, a collaborative venture between Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company – Masdar and Iberdrola, has reached a significant milestone with the successful installation of its first wind turbine. This project, which involves a total of 50 Vestas V174-9.5MW wind turbines, is set to be a major contributor to Germany's clean energy transition, providing renewable energy to approximately 475,000 households upon its completion.
Located off the coast of Pomerania, north-east of the island of Rügen, the 476MW Baltic Eagle project is an integral part of Iberdrola's 'Baltic Hub'. With operations planned from the port of Mukran in Sassnitz, the wind farm is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 800,000 tons annually. This initiative underscores the commitment of both Masdar and Iberdrola towards advancing offshore wind projects globally and supporting Germany in its energy transition efforts.

Felipe Montero, CEO of Iberdrola Deutschland, expressed his gratitude towards the Baltic Eagle team for their exceptional efforts and performance. He highlighted the importance of the partnership with Vestas and Masdar in reaching this stage of construction and expressed confidence in the successful completion of the project. Husain Al Meer, Director of Global Offshore Wind at Masdar, reiterated Masdar's dedication to offshore wind projects and their potential benefits for local communities and sustainable energy solutions.
The turbines for Baltic Eagle are being transported and installed using Fred. Olsen Windcarrier's jack-up vessel Blue Tern, which is especially suited for the challenging conditions in the Baltic Sea. Each turbine has a rotor diameter of 174 metres and a hub height of 107 metres, with optimised rotor blades designed for aerodynamic efficiency.
In July 2023, Masdar and Iberdrola solidified their partnership through a strategic agreement to co-invest in the Baltic Eagle project. Further strengthening their collaboration, at COP28, they announced a EUR15 billion strategic partnership agreement to explore joint development opportunities in offshore wind and green hydrogen projects across key markets such as Germany, the UK, and the US.
Nils de Baar, President of Vestas Northern & Central Europe, shared his enthusiasm for being part of this pivotal project. He acknowledged Iberdrola's trust in Vestas' technology and celebrated the strong collaboration that has been instrumental from the project's inception.
The Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm is on track for completion by the end of 2024. It represents a significant step forward in harnessing renewable energy sources to meet household energy needs while contributing substantially to environmental conservation efforts.
