Islamic Studies Scholarships Offered To Emirati Students By Awqaf And MBZUH
The General Authority for Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakah (Awqaf), in collaboration with Mohamed Bin Zayed University for Humanities (MBZUH), has initiated a project to develop a National Sharia Cadre for Religious Discourse. This initiative is part of Awqaf’s efforts to enhance competencies in Islamic affairs and prepare UAE Nationals for religious roles, aligning with the UAE’s strategy to involve Emiratis in nation-building activities.
Dr. Omar Habtoor Al Darei, Chairman of Awqaf, highlighted that the programme aims to attract and support Emirati high school graduates. These students will receive qualifications in religious and Sharia studies, enabling them to fill religious positions within Awqaf. The programme offers benefits such as covering tuition fees and providing a monthly housing and transportation allowance of AED6,000.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent with a final grade of at least 90 percent. Additionally, they need to score at least 1,200 points in the Emirates Standard Test (EMSAT) for Arabic and 950 points in English or its equivalent in other standard tests like TOEFL or IELTS. Candidates must also pass a personal interview.
Scholars are required to maintain a GPA of at least 3.6 each semester during their studies. They must also memorise eight parts of the Holy Qur’an and complete training seminars organised by Awqaf and MBZUH.
The programme aims to produce qualified individuals who can promote religious awareness and spread the values of citizenship and Islam. It seeks to consolidate the UAE’s efforts to foster tolerance, coexistence, and peace. The initiative targets distinguished high school graduates for roles such as Imams, preachers, Sharia researchers, and other related positions provided by Awqaf.
Dr. Khalifa Mubarak Al Dhaheri, Chancellor of MBZUH, stated that the project reflects the university’s vision of equipping society with Emirati graduates who have strong qualifications in Islamic and Sharia studies. These graduates will promote the principles and values of Islam that align with the UAE's leadership.
The project is designed to attract talented students who aspire to work in religious jobs. By supporting these students through scholarships and allowances, Awqaf aims to ensure they are well-prepared for their future roles in promoting religious discourse within the UAE.
This initiative underscores the UAE’s commitment to preparing its citizens for significant contributions to national development while promoting core values such as tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
