American University Of Sharjah Debuts Three New Research Centres At Innovation Expo

The American University of Sharjah (AUS) has taken a significant step towards enhancing its research capabilities with the inauguration of three new research centres. This development was announced during the AUS Innovation Expo: Future of Research and Technology in the UAE, held on 6th May. These centres are established within different colleges of the university, each focusing on critical areas such as sustainability, entrepreneurship, and material innovation, aligning with various national strategic agendas.

The Energy, Water and Sustainable Environment Research Centre, situated in the AUS College of Engineering, is designed to tackle sustainability challenges. It aims to contribute to the UAE Net Zero 2050 initiative and the National Water and Energy Demand Management Program. This centre's focus underscores the urgent need for sustainable solutions in energy and water management, reflecting a broader commitment to environmental stewardship.

AUS Unveils New Research Hubs

Similarly, the Centre for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Sustainable Development in the AUS School of Business Administration is set to support the UAE's National Entrepreneurship Agenda. This centre aims to nurture an entrepreneurial ecosystem, highlighting the university's role in fostering innovation and supporting economic diversification efforts in line with the UAE Economic Vision 2030.

The Materials Research Centre in the AUS College of Arts and Sciences is dedicated to advancing research in new materials, energy, and environmental solutions. This initiative is particularly relevant as it aligns with global trends towards sustainable development and technological innovation.

Dr. Mohamad El-Tarhuni, Interim Provost and Chief Academic Officer at AUS, emphasized the importance of these centres in cultivating a culture of research excellence. "The establishment of these transformative research centres underscores our strategic commitment to addressing pressing global challenges," he stated. The university aims to lead in innovation through rigorous inquiry and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The expo also featured insights from notable figures such as Dr. Chaouki T. Abdalla, Executive Vice President for Research at Georgia Institute of Technology, USA, and Hatem Al Mosa, Chief Executive Officer of Sharjah National Oil Corporation. Both speakers highlighted the importance of building a world-class research and innovation organization and fostering an innovation ecosystem.

Engaging the Next Generation

A significant aspect of the expo was the involvement of AUS students who presented their innovative ideas and entrepreneurial ventures. The AUS:Sheraa Pitch Challenge, a research poster session, and an exhibit by students from the College of Architecture, Art and Design showcased the practical application of their learning and research efforts.

This initiative not only highlights AUS's dedication to addressing global challenges through research but also its commitment to preparing its students for future leadership roles in innovation. By establishing these centres, AUS is positioning itself at the forefront of academic research and development in the region.
