Ashghal Completes Phase 1 Of Five Reservoirs For Treated Water In Qatar

The Public Works Authority, known as Ashghal, has announced the completion of the primary works for Phase 1 of the TSE Seasonal Storage Lagoons project. This initiative aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030, aiming to enhance environmental sustainability and optimise the use of treated and renewable water resources.

Eng. Waled Al Ghoul, the project engineer from the Drainage Networks Projects Department at Ashghal, highlighted that five reservoirs were constructed in this phase. These lagoons have a combined storage capacity of 22.5 million cubic metres. Additionally, an evaporation pond with a capacity of 8.7 million cubic metres was built. The reservoirs will receive treated water from the Doha South Sewage Treatment Plant via the rising main (D-Line).

Ashghal Completes Phase 1 of Water Reservoirs

Eng. Waled Al-Ghoul explained that the project aims to manage treated water usage throughout the year effectively. During winter, surplus water is stored for summer use when demand rises for irrigation in parks, roadsides, and fodder farms. Treated water also serves cooling systems and dust control at work sites.

Ashghal prioritised sustainable construction practices in this project. Over 8 million cubic metres of recycled excavation materials were reused to build the storage lagoons, minimising resource waste. The project also creates a natural habitat for migratory birds like pink flamingos and plovers.

The project involved constructing a 6 km access road and a 25 km internal road network. Additionally, 8 km of water pipelines were installed with necessary hydraulic components for reservoir supply and inter-reservoir water transport. Eight buildings were erected for operation and maintenance purposes, along with electrical substations and other facilities.

Ashghal achieved an impressive milestone during this phase by completing 10 million man-hours without any lost-time injuries (LTI). This was accomplished despite deep excavation works reaching depths of up to 10 metres below ground level, thanks to strict adherence to occupational safety and health standards.

This initiative not only supports environmental goals but also contributes to creating an attractive environment for wildlife while ensuring efficient water management across various sectors in Qatar.
