Arab Media Summit 2025: Sheikh Hasher Bin Maktoum Reflects On Media’s Past And Calls For Future Innovation

H.H. Sheikh Hasher bin Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Media Incorporated, highlighted the challenges Emiratis faced entering the media industry. Speaking at the Arab Media Forum, he noted that perseverance and vision were key to shaping today's vibrant media landscape. The session, titled ‘A Conversation with Pioneers of Media and Inspiration’, was moderated by Hamed bin Karam, Editor-in-Chief of Al Bayan newspaper.

Sheikh Hasher bin Maktoum reflected on his extensive career, tracing Dubai's media evolution from a small municipal press office to a regional journalism hub. He recalled the early days when Dubai News was the only newspaper, published weekly by the municipality with just two employees. This modest start laid the foundation for a more advanced media operation.

The formation of the UAE union spurred interest in national media, leading to the expansion of Dubai News and pioneering colour newspaper printing in the emirate. Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum recognised media's importance and invested in developing Dubai’s capabilities, supporting television and official newspapers' creation.

Sheikh Hasher bin Maktoum described his dual role during this formative period, managing TV broadcasts by day and working with Al Bayan's editorial team at night. He recalled daily editorial meetings comparing competitor newspapers like Al Khaleej and Al Ittihad, followed by nightly planning sessions for the next day's news.

Despite progress, Sheikh Hasher bin Maktoum expressed concern over traditional media's global decline amid digital platform growth. He noted many TV stations and media institutions lag behind technologically, urging print and broadcast media to innovate to stay relevant in the digital age.

He emphasised specialisation's importance in media, advising journalists to focus on specific fields like politics or economics for deeper coverage. Assigning the right journalist to each topic remains a challenge in TV and news media.

Youth Engagement in Media

Sheikh Hasher bin Maktoum advised young people entering media to build a strong foundation through reading and research while creating original content instead of copying others. He called for more youth-led programmes that serve communities and elevate discourse beyond commercial success.

"I hope to see the media rise across all fields—not just commercially but adding true societal value," he stated. Meanwhile, veteran director Matrook Nasser shared insights from his journey during a session titled ‘Dubai Film Pioneers with Matrook Nasser’ as part of the Media Chats series.

Nurturing Local Talent

Nasser traced his artistic roots back to childhood when a teacher first recognised his creative potential. His path began with studies in the UK, earning a diploma in cinema and television before further training with international companies. "I’ve always believed in passion over titles," he reflected.

Nasser recounted working with international producers while establishing his production company in Dubai. Those early years shaped his work ethic and approach as he built it from scratch. He stressed that while UAE has talented directors, many need more training before claiming directorial titles.

The Role of Technology

Nasser acknowledged AI's value in modern filmmaking for enhancing creativity through new angles, better lighting, and faster editing workflows. He encouraged young Emiratis to learn every production aspect—from montage to decor—before stepping behind cameras to tell stories reflecting Dubai’s spirit and history.

Both Sheikh Hasher bin Maktoum and Nasser emphasised dedication to craft mastery as essential for aspiring talents aiming to contribute meaningfully within UAE’s evolving media landscape.
